Of the local histories written for communities in northeastern Illinois, only some of them begin with any information before the last quarter or so of the nineteenth century. For those that do, they almost universally begin by saying that the Blackhawk War happened and then the first settlers came. But what actually happened during the Blackhawk War? Who was Blackhawk? And what about the Blackhawk statue? Join Curator, Jonathan Sebastian, for an exploration of the early history of this region in seeking answers to these questions.

02/20/2026

The Elk Grove Historical Society was created by Resolution #75-4 passed by the Board of Commissioners of the Park District on July 10, 1975. The inaugural board of the historical society consisted of ten members and met for the first time on the evening of Thursday, September 18. In the park district administration building, they elected officers and designated responsibilities including the drafting of a constitution and bylaws and the finding of a location for a museum. This work began immediately. Interestingly, they did not have to look for or plan for a building, just a location. Anthony and Therese Maioriello had already offered a very large donation.

This donation consisted of the house in which they had been living for two years at the corner of Arlington Heights Road and Clearmont Drive. It was thought to have been constructed approximately 120 years earlier in 1856. It had been in the Schuette family until sold to the Maioriellos in 1973. They lived in the house while the funeral home they planned to operate was being constructed.

The historical society made arrangements to tour the house on Tuesday, November 1 after which it was agreed that the home should be accepted to serve as a museum. So, the question was where to move the house as it became apparent that it would not be able to stay where it was. Put it on a parcel adjacent to Elk Grove High School was one suggestion. Centex owned the property in question and responded that it was not available for such a use. What about a location on Biesterfield Road? An interchange was going to be constructed at this point for the extension of I290 then under construction and certainly would promote visitation of a future museum. It was agreed to speak with the park district about the use of the property adjacent to the administrative building. It seemed like a good idea, and, in fact, agreement was reached fairly quickly.

The year 1975 came to its end with a bright future in view for the historical society. The board members of which spoke again to the Maioriellos and they were ready to see the house moved as the funeral home was nearing completion. The sooner the house could be moved, the better. The house was officially donated to the historical society with Monday, March 1 set as the date of the transfer of ownership. The park district now had to scramble to find a company that was equipped to move the house and who could do so very soon. The goal was March 15. It ultimately took nine more days for everything to be worked out.

On Wednesday, March 24, Grant House Movers arrived at 1199 S. Arlington Heights Road. The house was raised off of its foundation and placed onto a large flatbed truck. The truck headed north on Arlington Heights Road, but barely one tenth of a mile. The truck negotiated the left turn onto Brandywine Avenue and headed west. The truck reached the curve heading southwest to Somerset Lane where it made a right hand turn heading over to Wellington Avenue. But, it only proceeded 500 feet north to Banbury Avenue. The route led west on Banbury to Leicester Road. Another right turn and the truck was headed north, this time as far as Biesterfield Road. A final right hand turn brought the house to its new home at 399 Biesterfield Road. A foundation had already been excavated and the house was moved off the truck and onto the foundation. A somewhat circuitous route of 1.14 miles, but the Schuette farmhouse had made it! Now the members of the historical society could begin to prepare the museum!
