One of the primary documents in the WCHS Revolutionary War Manuscripts collection is a “Receipt of the Committee of Sequestration” dated May 27, 1777. The receipt is signed by James Hunt, a Commissioner of Sequestration for Westchester County, who issued this receipt to Gold Bowton (possibly Gould Bouton 1733–1814). Bouton had purchased wheat from the Commissioners of Sequestration in 1777. The Commissioners of Sequestration “paid for bringing in the effects of the Disaffected; took firewood, timber &c from Sequestered Estates for the use of the Army; and assessed small amounts, generally not exceeding £3., on farms formerly owned by those who had gone to the Enemy” (New York in the Revolution as Colony and State Supplement, Albany, N.Y.: 1901, 251). 1776-2026: It Happened Here in Westchester.
In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this year, we are spotlighting important Westchester County sites with Revolutionary War significance. The Elmsford Reformed Church in Elmsford, built 1793, is adjacent to a burial ground that was active from 1793 to 1913. A large marble monument in the cemetery marks the grave of Isaac Van Wart. During the Revolutionary War, Van Wart was one of the three celebrated captors of British spy, Major John André, in September 1780. Isaac Van Wart was born on October 25, 1762, and died on May 23, 1828.

Do you know how the hamlet of Hawthorne in Mount Pleasant got its name? In 1901, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, born May 20, 1851, established a care center for cancer patients in what was then known as Unionville. In gratitude, the residents of the area changed the name of their community from Unionville to Hawthorne. Rose Hawthorne (May 20, 1851-July 9, 1926) was the daughter of American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. (TWH, v81, n.1, WInter 2005).

Here's a fun salute to mothers and to Playland Park, which will open for the season on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17, followed by a grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 23.

When Playland Park opened for the first time, May 26, 1928, the event was celebrated with a float carrying "Mother Westchester" on a shoe, along with 36 little girls representing Westchester's 36 communities. Ada E. Perkins of Rye played the role of Mother Westchester and the little girls accompanying her on the shoe were from Milton School in Rye.

Thanks to the Westchester County Archives for the image, and Happy Mothers Day to all celebrating the occasion 💐

British Major John André was born on May 2, 1750. On October 2, 1780, during the American Revolution, André was hanged as a spy just north of Westchester County in Tappan, NY (after being found guilty of conspiring with American General Benedict Arnold). André’s parents were of Huguenot descent, his father from Geneva and his mother from France. André drew this self-portrait of himself the day before his ex*****on. Search the WCHS collection for information and articles about British Major John André and his capture in Tarrytown.
