History Camp concluded today with the campers conducting genealogy research and research on artifacts being displayed in our new Learning Center. Cindy Drake reminded students how to handle the artifacts that were professionally showcased and preserved in displays funded by the Nebraska State Historical Foundation.

The campers finished their camping experience by sharing learning statements with their parents and other guests.

History Camp. Day 3..

Today's focus at the Aldrich History Camp included a visit from Kami Voboril who shared strategies on conducting genealogy research. Then Mark Buell brought in his hog hauler so we could ride around and look at important Elmwood buildings while discussing their historical lineage and significance.

We express appreciation to Midland Community Foundation for a grant which provided new laptops for the campers to use. We also thank Elmwood Community Foundation for funds to help with camp expenses.

Day 2 of History Camp is in the books! Today we explored the contributions of veterans, especially Civil War veterans, by touring the G. A. R. Hall. A trip to the Elmwood Cemetery included a scavenger hunt, a QR code activity, and gravestone rubbings!

We've had lots of sponsors assist with the Aldrich Camps. Today, we recognize the Berneice M. Hopper Private Foundation and the Syracuse Library Foundation for their contributions.

History Camp started today in the Bess Streeter Aldrich Gardens. Thirteen enthusiastic campers explored artifacts, interviewed people, discussed events and viewed a historical site in order to learn about their hometown and our community's history.

Here we have pictures of guest speaker Cindy Drake who represented the Learning Center and talked about artifacts that reveal more about the community. Then campers interviewed Mrs. Aldrich before touring her beautiful 1922 prairie mansion home.

Today we thank the families of Charlotte/Arnold Stohlmann and Mary/Don Skalak who contributed to our camp expenses in their memories.

Happy Mother's Day from the Bess Streeter Aldrich House and Museum. Why not bring Mom out to the Aldrich House this afternoon to enjoy the Games Exhibit and check out the new mural. We are open from 1 to 4 today.

These pictures remind us of some of the early games Mrs. Aldrich would have written about and/or played with her kids. Did you know she played basketball in high school and college. She joked (we think,) that her bloomers had 10 yards of fabric!

You are probably aware that there are four camp opportunities for kids at the Aldrich House this summer: History, Writing, Art, and Theater Camp. We have received partial funding from the Syracuse Library Foundation, the Berneice M. Hopper Foundation, the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation and the Elmwood Community Foundation. This has enabled us to offer the camps at a reasonable cost.

Today, we are pleased to announce that we can offer additional savings due to gifts we have received honoring past Elmwood residents. In memory of Arnold and Charlotte Stohlmann and in memory of Don and Mary Skalak, the Aldrich Foundation is able to offer History Camp at half price (only $20). Also, we can offer a limited number of Writing Camp Scholarships for half price (only $20). Contact the director for more information or to enroll. We thank Judy and Wayne Stohlmann and Laurie and Rick Collins for their generosity and support of our educational programming.
