Ely ArtWalk

Ely ArtWalk The Ely ArtWalk is dedicated to the creation, promotion, and appreciation of the arts in Ely, MN. Sales go completely to the artists whose work are purchased.

The Ely ArtWalk is an annual art show held since 1999 during the Ely Winter Festival that transforms Ely Minnesota's downtown into an arts district, featuring the work of more than 100 visual artists. The event is free to the public and in the last few years has become an anticipated winter event drawing visitors from all over northern Minnesota. This event showcases local artists and those who ha

ve a lasting connection to the Ely community, so it retains a local character. It is not a juried show and amateurs and professionals exhibit side by side. It is not a craft show, but a local craft show sometimes takes place during the same time period and all events are coordinated with the Ely Winter Festival. Through the goodwill of area merchants and the work of a dedicated staff of volunteers, the Ely ArtWalk exhibits artwork created by established and emerging artists in the store windows of downtown Ely. Art lovers can view over 500 pieces of original work in all mediums, with much of the art for sale. Participating artists are from the Ely area and represent an amazing depth of regional artistic talent. The Ely ArtWalk is dedicated to the creation, promotion, and appreciation of the arts, and is made possible in part by a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council through an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature and the McKnight Foundation, the Ely Chamber of Commerce and Northern Lakes Arts Association. If you are an Ely area artist who would like to participate, an art lover who would like to volunteer or contribute, or a merchant with available display space, please visit our website at elyartwalk.org for more information.

ArtWalk Day 27!! Just one day left to do the walk! Today on this cloudy day, we share with you the bright work of local photographer Tim Mattimore in the windows of Treehouse Broadband!

About the artist:

"Tim Mattimore is a landscape photographer who hails from New York and now calls Superior National Forest in Northern Minnesota home, alongside his wife, Johannah.

A love of landscape and wildlife photography was born late in life for Tim, who lived in NYC, Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis for many years working as a Creative Director in the Ad Industry.

It was a trip to Iceland in late 2018 that brought a deep sense of appreciation for nature and the planet we all call home.

Theres still a sense of the urban landscape and energy that colored most of Tim’s adult life in his images. “It’s interesting to have been stimulated by something for most of my life - the chaotic, kinetic energy of the city - and then walk into the forest today… it’s a completely different look at the world, yet the awe that I feel is similar in many ways…”

Tim’s photography has been featured in Outside Magazine, Lake Superior Magazine and Cut + Paste amongst others. His drone photography of Minneapolis, Chicago and Iceland has been awarded by Communication Arts Magazine as well as The ADC (Art Directors Club).

Tim is a Certified Part 107 Drone Pilot as well as stills photographer. His drone films were integral in raising funds for non-profit Friends of the Boundary Waters."

ArtWalk Day 17!! On this chilly Monday morning, we're featuring the work of Autumn Cole in the windows of POTLUCK!

From Autumn:

"I’ve been sewing and quilting once I learned to sew on my grandmother’s treadle sewing machine as a child. I enjoy sewing both modern and traditional quilts, using unique fabrics and designs. this past year, I have inspired young people to sew during Sewing for Kids sew days at the Ely Folk School. For me, sewing is creative, fun, and ever so practical as a lifelong skill. It’s a wonderful thing to do during the long Ely winters as well. Corrine Hill and Kari Hope are local women who did the beautiful long arm quilting on my quilts."

From Jane:

"Jane Dandron - Holtz is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Ely, MN.
When they are not helping with local theater productions and working on personal work (jewelry making, drawing, painting, and printmaking) they work full time with local Ely Youth through ECR.

The emotional and physical ties that connect us to spaces shift endlessly as we move throughout our lives. I’m interested in the way those ties can flex and break, and how they can mend. Using imagery centered around bodily forms and interiors I attempt to explore the way which we find meaning in our own and shared spaces."

ArtWalk Day 15!! On this snowy morning, we share with you the quilt work of Dorothy Sand in the windows of Ace Hardware!

From Dorothy:

"My name is Dorothy Sand and I have been quilting since 1991. I love to quilt and I love to give my quilts away. I am also a Retired ELCA Lutheran Pastor and am presently serving Grace Lutheran Church. I live in the woods outside of Ely. The scene outside my window both inspires me and makes me incredibly grateful both for the ability to quilt and to live in such a beautiful environment and community. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL across the street from Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs. From Chicago to Wisconsin, to Ohio to Texas and finally, to Ely, MN, I have been fortunate to meet and become familiar with such diversity in our world. My joy is in giving back and I do that through my quilting."
