Here’s a photograph from inside the old Timber Post Office in northern Shannon County in the 1950s. The photograph was not labeled with any names, can anyone identify these two fine folks for us? Where did the old post office sit at Timber?

It seems like just yesterday that the old barn at Devil’s Well was still standing, but in reality it was burned by arsonists almost (or over) a decade ago now. This picture of the beautiful old barn was sent to us, and we’d like to put out a call for any other pictures of the barn, so we can preserve its memory here at the museum.

Do you have a picture of the old barn at Devil’s Well before it burned? Share it in the comments below!

Though not in Shannon County, this postcard from museum board member Alan Banks’s collection is too cool not to share. This card shows Turner’s Mill at the village of Surprise on the Eleven Point River in Oregon County. Water was carried from the spring to the mill via a wooden trough that you see here, which would turn the massive metal waterwheel.

All of the wooden structure you see in this image is long gone, however, the metal waterwheel remains, and is still one of the most popular spots for visitors along the Eleven Point River.

Lots of changes have taken place here at the Shannon County Museum! A big change that we are working on is the expansion of our open hours. We would like to be open to the public on a more regular basis, and stay open later in the evenings to catch some of the floating and camping traffic. To pull this off, we need to add a few more volunteers to our team!

Volunteers are asked to cover 3-hour shifts on Fridays and Saturdays. We are experimenting with Sundays and Thursdays, and if interest is high enough we will add additional shifts on those days. Volunteers are responsible for opening and closing the museum. You’ll also be manning the gift shop during hours that the museum is open. Volunteers are welcome to pull and study any materials from the David A. Dix Research Center while manning the museum. Come do some research while helping us serve our community! If you would like to join our volunteer team, send us a message and we will send you in the right direction to get on the schedule.

The old Rector School house, almost as far north as you can go in Shannon County, was constructed in 1925. Later, it was remodeled when a 2-year Job high school program was offered to rural students. Differing from a typical one-room schoolhouse, Rector School was two-room building with a full basement. Part of this school district was included into the Timber R-13 district when Shannon County consolidated its rural schools in 1956. The building no longer stands today.

On May 16th, Eminence-native Tom Akers was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, making his already proud hometown even prouder. Tom was an EHS Redwing, graduating in the class of 1969 and later coming back to serve as a Principal for the school district. Akers secured his legacy as an astronaut while serving as a Mission Specialist on four separate space shuttle missions, starting on the Discovery shuttle in October of 1990. He then served two consecutive missions on the Endeavor shuttle in 1992 and 1993 repairing a satellite and the Hubble Telescope, and one final mission on the Atlantis shuttle to rendezvous with the Russian space station, Mir, in September 1996. It goes without saying, but we here at the museum think Tom Akers is incredibly deserving of his place in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Tom, you continue to make your hometown proud.

Below are some various newspaper clippings and shots from Tom Aker’s legendary career as an astronaut with NASA. Enjoy!

REMINDER:

Tomorrow, from 9:00am until noon, the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center in Salem is hosting a special opening of their ongoing Civilian Conservation Corps exhibit, with a Walk-and-Learn event with the creator of the exhibit at 10:00am. The exhibit covers C.C.C. camps in Dent and surrounding counties, including two camps located in Shannon County. The exhibit and the Walk-and-Learn event are free to attend. The exhibit will continue through the end of July, with normal open hours from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. If you have an interest in the C.C.C. and the way they affected our parks and forests in this region, this is an event you don’t want to miss!
