San Diego Botanic Garden

San Diego Botanic Garden San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) is a 37-acre urban oasis located in the city of Encinitas, California
(1342)

We garden to create, share and apply plant wisdom in our world. The Garden’s four miles of trails display more than 5,000 plant species and varieties, including 300 plants for which SDBG is the only garden maintaining a population. SDBG has 15 gardens that represent different regions of the world, 12 demonstration gardens, and the largest public bamboo collection in North America. SDBG has three c

hildren’s gardens, including its flagship, one-acre Hamilton Children’s Garden, the largest kids’ garden on the west coast. The Garden works in botany, conservation horticulture, and applied plant sciences to address our biggest local and global issues—from food security and climate change to land management and home gardening. SDBG collaborates with local academics, companies and organizations to create innovative, impactful programs and initiatives; to conserve plants and habitats for the future; and to create and share new knowledge. By expanding its scientific and conservation role to address our most pressing issues and human-plant relationships, SDBG is quickly becoming a model 21st century public plant science institution.

Rotting meat might not sound appealing... unless you’re a pollinator 🪰🌺

Luis takes us inside the Conservatory for a closer look at one of the strangest plants inside: the voodoo lily, Amorphophallus konjac. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because this bizarre beauty is a cousin of the infamous co**se flower, Amorphophallus titanum - and yes, it shares that same unforgettable scent used to attract pollinators.

We'll let you know the next time it's in bloom so you can come see (and sniff) it for yourself!

A glow of aquamarine blue earned this orchid Best of Show!🏆

This week’s winner, Cleisocentron gokusingii (merrillianum) ( #1342), captivated visitors with its rare true-blue flowers. The delicate ½-inch blooms have been described as almost translucent, like water or glass. Native to the mossy forests of Borneo, this extraordinary orchid is treasured for both its rarity and its striking color.

Congratulations and a big thank you to Betty Kelepecz for sharing this remarkable orchid with us during Orchids in the Wild.

There’s just one week left before the exhibition closes on June 1, don’t miss your final chance to experience Orchids in the Wild and vote for the final best of show!

Tea brings people together now just as it has for thousands of years 🍵 Today on International Tea Day, we’re celebrating the rich cultural history, health benefits, and economic importance of the remarkable plant behind one of the world’s most beloved beverages: Camellia sinensis.

White, green, black, yellow, and oolong teas all come from the same species, and their unique flavors, colors, and aromas are created through different growing and processing methods. With billions of cups drank around the world each day, tea remains second only to water as the world’s most consumed beverage. And speaking of water…let’s just say Ben got a surprise assist from the sprinklers during filming. 💦

⚠️ Always confirm the correct plant ID and consult your doctor before consuming any part of a plant.
