Happy Pride Month from the Erie Art Museum. 🌈

For the month of June, you'll notice our logo has a new look—a small but intentional way of marking what we believe: that the LGBTQ+ community is part of the fabric of this Museum and has been for over 100 years.
This is a space for everyone. And we mean everyone.

We're also celebrating with something special this month—Pride in the Collection, an inaugural evening reception on June 6 honoring LGBTQ+ artists in our permanent collection. Tickets are on sale now: erieartmuseum.org/pride

Look at this dream team—even if the lighting had other plans. 🌟 (That's why we added labels!)

Mural artists Sarah Howard and Gaby Reyes, filmmaker Jackie George, and our Executive Director Laura Domencic came together at the brand-new mural project at 10th & State—the former Avalon Hotel—for something worth stepping into the sun for.

Laura was on-site to share her thoughts on why art matters to Erie, and honestly? This image says it all, backlight and all. These people are actively shaping our city through placemaking, and we couldn't be more proud to be part of a community that creates like this.

We're a little early, but we couldn't resist. These Pride stickers just arrived and they'll be available in our gift shop starting June 3 — just in time for Pride month.

While you're marking your calendars, save June 6 for our inaugural Pride in the Collection event. It's the first time we're spotlighting LGBTQ+ artists and histories from our permanent collection, and we'd love to see you there.

Registration is open: Link in the first comment.

Big news from the Customs House! 🏛️

If you walk by 411 State Street this week and notice something's different—you're right. “Eternal Vigilance” is taking a well-earned break!
For the first time in decades, our bronze sentinel is stepping aside to make room for the final phase of our marble staircase restoration. And here's the best part: this move isn't just about preserving history—it's about opening it up to everyone.

We're installing a new ADA-compliant railing on the 187-year-old Vermont marble staircase, one of the earliest uses of native marble in American architecture. Once the work is complete, “Eternal Vigilance” will return to a new perch at the mid-point of the stairs, where it'll keep doing what it does best: standing guard over one of Erie's most beautiful landmarks.

Art is essential for everyone. Preserving our past while building an accessible future? That's what this moment means to us.

📍 Customs House, 411 State Street
🙏 This project is made possible through the generous support of Thomas B. Hagen, the Keystone Historic Preservation Project Construction Grant Program, and the Erie Community Foundation.

Week one of Improv at the Museum is officially in the books, and this group brought the energy.

Led by Teaching Artist Sara Fisher, participants are learning to create in real time—no scripts, no perfection, just listening, collaboration, and a whole lot of play. Through guided exercises and group work, Sara's creating a space where it's safe to take risks, be silly, and see what happens when you let spontaneity lead.

Improv asks us to trust the moment and each other, and these folks are already doing just that. Can't wait to see what the next three weeks bring.

Plavcan is staying a while longer ✨

Thanks to the generosity of Gary Cacchione, Joseph Plavcan's piece Public Dock will stay on loan with the EAM for a little longer. Because we're making room for a new exhibit in the Nicholas Gallery (Thomas Paquette, opening June 10—get hyped), we needed a new home for this beauty. And by golly, we nailed it.

Now visitors will be greeted by one of Erie's most iconic artists the moment they walk through our doors.

Shoutout to .paropacic and James Pearson for modeling the ideal viewing posture while sporting those gorgeous Plavcan mugs available in the gift shop. Please send them fan mail in the comments. They've earned it.
