After 13 years and more than 100 juried photography exhibitions, the Darkroom Gallery, located next to Martoneโ€™s near the Five Corners, will close on December 31st.

Owner Ken Signorello said, โ€œWe had a good run, exhibiting the work of fine photographers from around the world. Even though we had some great help, we never quite recovered from the pandemic. Many will remember my associates, Damaris Drummond and Tim Gottshall, both instrumental to our longevity and impossible to replace.โ€

Darkroom Gallery will host a going out of business sale at 12 Main St. this Friday, November 24th!

Signorello said there are many items for sale, including picture frames, chairs, tables, photography books, and even an old paper cutter.

Not wanting such a prominent space left vacant, Signorello searched for a replacement tenant. A new business has secured the space and should be up and running after a month of conversion.

Jake Tran, owner of two Essex Junction eateries, The FireBird Cafe and The Nest, will be setting up โ€œBespoke Bikes & Everyday Special Things.โ€œ Tran says the slogan of the new retail store is โ€œchoose well and buy less.โ€ Tran said that his new store will โ€œbuild custom bikes and stock everyday special things that we are proud to own and have them last a long time.โ€

A big sincere thanks to all of our many friends and followers who sent 10th birthday greetings to Darkroom Gallery! It's gratifying to know the gallery hasn't been forgotten even with our lack of activity in the last three months. We could never have anticipated having our 10th birthday fall during such fraught times, and it's a disappointment to have to cancel plans for a celebratory exhibition and reception. We'll try to make up for it in some way not long after we get the OK to call the staff back from furlough and open the doors again.
Thanks, too, for your loyalty and steady participation in our exhibitions and events of the last decade. For an upstart gallery in a small town in Vermont we think we've done pretty well - 110 exhibitions, 98 jurors (some of the best and brightest photographers, curators, editors, writers and teachers in the business today), thousands of exhibit entrants and many more thousands of photos submitted. The work we've exhibited has been of the highest possible quality, and not a few of our exhibitors have gone on to successful careers somewhere in the field of photography.
At this point we don't have a date for announcing new Calls for Submissions and new exhibitions, but we'll keep you posted both here on Facebook and on our evolving website. You can still be in touch if you have questions or concerns by email, [email protected].
Stay safe and healthy in these difficult times, and keep shooting those photos. You may not be able to travel the country or the world, but with creative eyes you'll be able to see things in your surroundings you might have missed before. And thanks again for sticking with us.

โ€œLightning strike over Lake Superior from Duluth.โ€

Photographing nature, Iโ€™m used to taking calculated risks. Iโ€™ve learned to โ€œreadโ€ how likely a bull bison or elk is to charge, the shifting weather on Superior, and in this case, the fact that the thunderstorm had already passed over me. Those things I can see, and I have experience with.

Covid-19 is invisible, and still, largely unknown โ€” we have no way to โ€œreadโ€ it. As a high risk individual, Iโ€™m personally terrified by it. But, Iโ€™m even more fearful for how it is distracting us from the far greater threats of climate change, ocean acidification, and overpopulation, which not only threaten us, but all life on earth.

We're proud to count Peter Turnley among the many fine photographers who've been jurors for exhibitions at Darkroom Gallery over the years. Peter's sensitive photos and his deeply moving written commentary on the effects of the corona virus on the people of New York are extraordinary.
