Our Land & Sea program is about so much more than getting kids outside. It's about helping the next generation find a connection to their history, their heritage, their culture, and the natural world around them.
It's about understanding the place they call home, and discovering that they are part of its story.
Here in Essex, the river has shaped our community for centuries. It's where generations of shipbuilders worked, where families made their living, and where so much of our history began.
But the Essex River is also an estuary, an extraordinary ecosystem where fresh and salt water meet, and where an incredible diversity of life finds food, shelter, and a place to grow.
What a beautiful place to teach children about the connections between people, history, and the environment!
Through Land & Sea, we're helping kids discover the world right outside their doors. They're learning about the river, the creatures that depend on it, the people who came before them, and one another.
Because when children develop a relationship with a place, they begin to care about what happens to it. And when they understand that they belong to a community, they begin to understand their responsibility to it, too.
