Continuing Dean's photos of the building of the South Canadian Bridge - here are first steps. In one picture, you can see the sandy bank of the south side that caused all the trouble during Katy construction. It acted like quicksand and the supports couldn't take hold.

The posts for this month will be Dean's shots of the building of the current South Canadian bridge. Today there are before and after pictures. The rest of the month will show the gradual progress to get it completed. Remember, trying to get a bridge to hold up over the South Canadian was one of the reasons Eufaula was founded. The Katy Railroad attempts at constructing a railroad bridge kept failing, and the people and equipment stuck on the north side of the river kept growing. So, business moved here from North Fork Town and gradually the tents people were living in transitioned to houses and a town grew up around the terminal.

Dean labeled these as a Youth Conservation Corps meeting in 1976. The Youth Conservation Corps presently is a federal program for teenagers hired to help with the maintenance of federal lands. Not sure what they were trained for here or even where this meeting was held.
