ATTENTION ARCHAEOLOGISTS! We're hiring a Director of our Archaeological Research Division! Apply today.

The museum has been a major force in the archaeological research of Oregon since the early 1930s, and that legacy continues to evolve and grow.

Over the last 40 years the museum has focused on aiding federal, state, and local agencies, private engineering firms, and utility companies in meeting their obligations to identify, protect, and manage cultural resources affected by project development.

The museum's research staff conducts field inventory surveys and site assessments to evaluate National Register status. We provide guidance regarding the protection and management of cultural resources, including data recovery excavations, laboratory analysis, and descriptive reporting. The museum is also dedicated to synthetic interpretation of research results and has a considerable record of publications, professional papers, and presentation of research results in museum exhibitions. "We’re about an hour from the border to Idaho—we are so far from everybody and we are just starved for things like this. We have so many different age-level kids—2-year-olds to 12-year-olds—and [museum education] is a leveled education that can appeal to every learner. It’s amazing.”

—Missy Grammon, youth services coordinator for the Baker County Library District .

"The study is one example of how the museum and its field schools are furthering the field of archaeology, McDonough said. Museums like the UO’s steward objects, fossils and other archaeological materials that researchers and others uncovered before there were means for studying them. These objects hold vital clues to the past, but only recently has technology advanced enough to probe the secrets they hold."
