Off a quiet stretch of highway in Evangeline Parish sits Mallet, a small Black Creole farming settlement so tucked away that most Louisiana road maps barely mark it, yet families there have worked the same land for well over a century. 🌾

Mallet grew up around small subsistence farms and the parish church that became the community's anchor, St. Ann Catholic Church, where generations were baptized, married, and buried in records that genealogists still comb through today. Families here farmed rice and cotton, raised livestock, and largely relied on each other, since larger nearby towns offered Black Creole residents little in the way of services or welcome during the Jim Crow decades.

Communities like Mallet rarely make it into official Louisiana history, overshadowed by New Orleans and the bigger Creole towns along the Cane River, but they hold just as much of the state's Black Creole story, told through church ledgers, family land, and oral memory passed down at the kitchen table rather than in any museum.

👑🎥 𝗔 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲.

It's pretty fun to wake up on a Sunday morning and find that one of our 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙖 𝙍𝙤𝙮𝙖𝙡𝙨 (Annette Lafleur) sent us an old clipping from The Eunice News.🗞️

This one takes us back to 1970 with Love Story starring Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal on The Queen's marquee.

By then, The Queen had already lived quite a life - built in 1937, damaged by fire, rebuilt in 1948, and later renovated and modernized.

And for a little perspective: Only ONE of The Queen Cinema's four current owners was even alive when this photo was taken, and he was only one year old.

But our favorite part might be the front of the building.

Because after more than half a century, she's still standing there looking remarkably familiar. Apparently The Queen found her look early. 56 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙚’𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠. 𝙄𝙘𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙧. 💄👑

Eunice, 1946, Joyce Sanders Comeaux was a Senior at Eunice High school!
80 years later she is the last member of her class still living and living it to the fullest! Enjoy your 80th Homecoming celebration!
Look for her in the parade Thursday!
