In the Arts District. Open by appointment and during special events. Billy, a Chicago native and former New Orleanian moved to Evansville in 2005. Arts District.

BHS&G is Evansville's only official live/work/sell art space and offers original fine art in a unique setting. Located at 916 SE Sixth Street in the historic Louise Kramer House, a Queen Anne cottage in the Arts District, visitors are invited into the artist's residence to view his work in a home setting. Three parlors of the restored 'painted lady' serve as the gallery, while Billy's loft studio

is located on the upper level. BHS&G is the model for the adaptive re-use of small, historic houses for artists and artisans relocating to this unique downtown neighborhood. His unique style and fresh perspective have earned him numerous art and civic awards and the reputation as a noted artist in the city, an urban art pioneer, and the nickname Mr. Billy works in several media, principally in acrylic and oil on canvas; watercolor, pastel, charcoal, pen & ink on paper; unique prints; and sculpture. He also has built costumes, stage and party sets, and restored two historic houses. Billy's most popular works are his architectural portraits, whose subjects range from the grand to prosaic; tree and garden portraits; human and animal portraiture; and wire sculptures. Billy's work is also sold through the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana (318 Main Street in Innovation Pointe, 422-2111, M-F, 9-5) and just around the corner from his gallery at artWorks, inside the River City Food Co-op (116 Washington, 401-7301, open daily).

Billy was pleased to be included in the invitational landscape show at the Krempp Gallery in the Jasper Arts Center, which opens today and runs through January 29, 2018. We're driving up for the opening reception tomorrow evening. This little picture is not in the show but is appropriately titled "On the Road to Jasper" and was made after a summer road trip to the area. # # #

George Haynie established his legendary drug store in 1887 at the corner of Second, Parret and Adams, a corner that would eventually bear his name and from which the Haynie’s Corner Arts District draws its name. After Haynie retired in 1928, a drug store operated from this building until it was destroyed by fire in 1944. Today the site is a temporary green space awaiting redevelopment. [ 161 more words ]

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana kicked off its annual member holiday sale last weekend. In addition to regular gallery hours (Tuesday-Friday, 10 am to 4 pm), the AC will be open this Saturday, November 25 from 10 am to 5 pm in observance of Small Business Saturday. Another worthy event this Saturday, November 11 is Patchwork Central's annual Holiday Art Sale (9 am to 3 pm, 100 Washington Avenue). This long-standing tradition featuring professional, folk and children's art is just a couple of blocks from Empty Bowls. Billy will not have a table this year, but encourages you to come down, support our local not-for-profits, and explore the Haynie's Corner Arts District.

These past months people of all ages throughout the city have been making ceramic bowls which will be sold with a container of soup to raise money for community food pantries. Billy Hedel did not make a bowl, but he did make a story painting called Empty Bowls in support of this important effort. It takes place this Saturday, November 11 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Ballroom at Sauced, 1113 Parrett Street at Haynie’s Corner.

After a successful run up in Vincennes, The New World Order: 1-20-2017 has come home to roost in The Window on the Walkway at the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana (318 Main Street, Evansville, IN 47713 812/422-2111). Town & Country: Portraits of Urban and Natural Landscapes launches this evening at The Open Gallery (329 Main Street, Vincennes IN, 812/881-6475). A reception takes place from 5:30 to 9:00 ET during which Billy will talk with visitors about the stories the paintings tell and the stories about how the pictures came to be.
