Our Story

The Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad began in 1990 when a group of community members wanted to preserve a broken steam locomotive which was just sitting in the open air. They talked and gained support for moving the locomotive to a shelter where it could be out of the weather.

Then in 1992 they went the extra step and began planning to restore the worn locomotive. Years of hard work and effort turned out in July of 1999 when the locomotive, Engine No. 1, was tested and fired under her own steam after seventy long years.

Since then continued work has been going on and a museum was established in 2006 to allow the operations of Engine No. 1 to continue. Many artifacts and pieces of history from the Tanana Mines & Tanana Valley Railroad, as well as other historic railroads in Alaska, have come to light and are now documented and on display in the museum.

The museum is open daily during the summer - tours and admission is free. Historic movies and information is shown each day, and any questions can be answered by our knowledgeable volunteers!
