Our displays begin with the Revolutionary War, and continue through the Spanish-American War, both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Operations DESERT STORM, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM and Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW) such as Grenada and Panama. All ranks and branches of the service are represented - you'll have the opportunity to see artifacts belonging to privates a

nd generals alike, as well as relics from the opposing side in each conflict. For those interested in World War II, one of our prized artifacts on display is an actual piece of the battleship USS Arizona, generously donated by the United States Navy. The next time you're in Fairborn, stop by and join us in remembering those who have served in defense of liberty - a place where our veterans are welcomed and honored!

A somewhat scarce article of Army Air Force flight clothing came through our doors yesterday! The Type C-2 was a light weight wool sweater intended for layering under flying clothing. The "Vest - Flying Winter, Type C-2," was described as "For wear with winter flying suit only. Sweater-type vest made of olive drab worsted yarns. Raglan sleeves with rib knit cuffs. Rib knit vee type collar. Tubular rib knit waistband. Interlocking slide fastener." It was available in even sizes from 36 through 50. According to the Type Designation Sheet the C-2 was designated as Standard on June 18, 1934, as Limited Standard on June 2, 1944, and as Obsoleted and Removed April 10, 1946. This example was made by the Goodwear Knitting Mills. It also features a zipper which incorporates a complex fabric cover over the teeth. This example was worn by Bernard A. Murray, originally from Ironton, OH, who also lived in Fairborn and Springfield.....he served in the Army Air Forces from June 1942 to December, 1945. Thanks, Margaret!

We were offered a donation of artifacts of family members spanning World War I to the early Cold War in West Berlin so our Curator picked up a large plastic bin with some real treasures last night. They include artifacts from a WWI Artillery officer, a WWI Chaplain, a Korean War-era Air Force NCO, and a WWII soldier who served in the 94th Infantry Division in Europe. Thanks Matthew!

All gave some, some gave all. On this , we remember and pay tribute to those who gave all, including the estimated 8,421 merchant mariners who lost their lives in WWII. Some sources have that number much higher,

Our final donation for this weekend comes from our own volunteer Kevin, who brought us a nice Turkish Ma**er. Although not our primary focus of American militaria, this rifle represents a decades long development of Ma**er rifles by an opposing side in World War I, and an "Armed Neutrality" nation in WWII. Thanks, Kevin!

John heads up the reenactors of the 27th Infantry Regiment "Wolfhounds" and promised to bring some Red Cross items for our collections. Even though our Military History Muster was cancelled, John kept his word and brought us some real treasures! His artifacts include several pieces of nurses uniform headgear, a nice Donut Dolly souvenir and an absolutely mint, straight out of the box, Red Cross flag, just to name a few. Thanks, John!

Phil brought in more items from Sergeant Royer's estate, including some items from Sgt Royer's father. Among the items was this WWII Home Front glass, part of a series made by H. Fishlove and Co. The water-transfer decal has a little bit of damage, but it's still a neat item Home Front artifact...thanks, Allie and Phil!

Barbara, who will be joining us as a volunteer soon, brought in several small photo albums of photos her father took while serving in Australia and the Philippines in WWII. She told us that he'd taken a lot of photos of the "naughty pictures" on the aircraft coming through. Today our Curator scanned all her photos, and some of the nose art is eye-catching....almost all of them are stamped on the reverse "DO NOT MAIL."
