This weekend, Troop 63502 kicked off our first camping trip of the season with our annual Memorial Day weekend spring trip! This wasn't just any old campsite, however. In fact, our troop pioneered this location for Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts after getting all necessary safety approvals and insurances that allowed us this experience.
We headed to Wild Ride in Connecticut, a beautiful wild horse sanctuary, where we stayed in an incredible 20-person geometric clear dome tucked deep into the 150 acres of untouched wilderness they roam in. Even though the rain stuck around the entire trip and hid the stars from us, it honestly made the whole experience feel a little extra cozy and magical.
We started our adventure with a short hike alongside the horses to explore some of the property before getting to participate in the sanctuary’s evening feeding routine. The girls all shouted “FEED BAGS!” and watched as the horses trotted along side us toward the barn for dinner. We got to see the herd’s pecking order in full display while each horse received their grain bag, and afterward, the horses who wanted attention stayed nearby so the girls could pet and interact with them.
Shorty afterward, we got to watch a training session where the staff showed us the positive reinforcement methods they use to safely work with horses while still allowing them to remain wild on the land. In this particular case, a horse named Lloyd showed us her soccer skills once she was taught how to touch and kick the ball! We also had the opportunity to help socialize one of the newer horses who is still learning to trust people. The girls patiently fed him treats one by one, helping him build positive associations with kids and human interaction.
Back at camp, the girls helped prepare dinner together, made s’mores, celebrated our birthday scout with cupcakes and a round of Happy Birthday, and ended the night snuggled up inside the dome watching a movie before bed.
The next morning, after a quick cereal breakfast, we jumped right into working on a part of our Art and Design badge. For this activity, each girl was given a canvas and challenged to paint using nature instead of paintbrushes. Since it was still raining, they even used the rainwater in their artwork.
Rain and all, this trip was filled with teamwork, new experiences, creativity, muddy feet, laughter, and memories we’ll never forget 🥹
