5/25/2026 - 53 years ago the Texas Ranger Museum in Falfurrias (the first Texas Ranger Museum in Texas) changed its name to Heritage Museum at Falfurrias—Texas Ranger Room. The name was changed after the Museum’s collection grew to include other Pioneer and vintage memorabilia and artifacts and because another Texas Ranger Museum was created in North Texas—but we were the first.

The Heritage Museum at Falfurrias held a Flag-Raising Ceremony on Saturday, December 6, 2025 in observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Weekend and in tribute to the memory of Navy SK 3rd Class Roberto Stillman Garcia. Garcia was serving aboard the USS California stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii when the Japanese Forces attacked the ships in the harbor. Stillman Garcia was reported Missing in Action in the Pacific for more than 84 years until April of 2025 when his remains were matched thru DNA to 3 of his family members. He was laid to rest at Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery on October 21, 2025.

After 84 years following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the remains of MIA U.S. Navy SK 3rd Class Roberto Stillman Garcia were positively identified earlier this year thru familial DNA from several of his family members. Roberto’s family lived on a ranch in Concepcion, Texas but he attended school in Falfurrias. He was a 1936 graduate of Falfurrias High School. After enlisting in the military at the age of 21, he was assigned to the U.S.S. California stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. His ship was torpedoed by the Japanese military enemy and though his remains were recovered, they were never identified therefore, his military status was MIA for 84 years. By the Grace of God and modern technology, Roberto’s remains were positively identified and returned back to his family for burial at Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery in his homeland of Texas. In recognition of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (which falls on Sunday, December 7, 2025), the Heritage Museum will hold a Flag-raising ceremony on SATURDAY, December 6, 2025, at 10 a.m. in the front yard of Heritage Museum, 515 N. Saint Marys Street, Falfurrias, Texas. This ceremony will also honor the memory of SK 3rd Class Roberto Stillman Garcia for the sacrifice of his life which he gave to his Country, as well as all the military who are still listed as MIA or KIA from the attack at Pearl Harbor. Never Forgotten, Always Honored.

I would like to publicly thank Falfurrias VFW Post #7634 Commander Ric Rubio for volunteering his time to replace the U.S. Flag at the Heritage Museum at Falfurrias. He also donated the rope and the flag. This is the third time he has done this over the past 2 years. May the Lord bless his kindness. Thank you, Ric and thank you for your service to our Country and our community.

Better late than never! I would like to publicly express my gratitude to L&J Wrecker Service for volunteering to move the 1949 Fire Truck preserved at the Heritage Museum. This Fire Truck was donated to the Museum more than 15 years ago by the Falfurrias Volunteer Fire Department when the late Gonzalo Benavides was the Fire Chief. Due to insufficient cover (it was under the porch-back room of the Museum), the truck was exposed to the elements, rodents and raccoons. With a grant from the John and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation, the porch/room is being renovated to provide a better display room for the history of the Falfurrias and Southern Brooks Volunteer Fire Department. This renovation will ensure the preservation and display of memorabilia and pictures and will be dedicated to our Falfurrias/Encino Volunteer Fire Fighters, past and present. I also express our gratitude to Jose "Quiro" Hinojosa for volunteering to remove the truck's seat and take it to be reupholstered in the Valley. This re-upholstering is estimated to cost about $450. If anyone would like to contribute a monetary donation to help with the expense of the re-upholstering the interior seat and cleaning the exterior of the fire truck, it would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made in memory of a former firefighter or fire chief or in appreciation for past and current volunteer fire fighters. A tax-deductible donation can be sent to the Heritage Museum at Falfurrias thru Cash App: $HeritageMuseum or by check mailed to P.O. Box 86, Falfurrias, Texas 78355. A donation receipt will be mailed to you. Thank you, Genie Nielsen Vaughn for being the first to donate to this project!
Thank you to all those who support the Museum's efforts to preserve and to educate about our local history.
