Some 20 plus volunteers reported aboard KENNEDY this past Saturday to undertake important work preserving this destroyer.

Don't miss the boat... volunteering matters!

Great Day aboard JOEY P 850 for our October Fall Field Day 2026.
We had about 25 volunteers aboard with many missing the ship picture!

Great work was accomplished and moved the ship forward prior to winter temperatures setting in. Will report on the work projects as we move forward as All Hands are relaxing after the long day.

Thank you to all of our crew who spent the day with us aboard this historic destroyer undertaking metal work, paint prep, organizing, and restoration! It is very much appreciated.

So where did the battleship’s goblin/gremlin come from? Affectionately known as “George” for his resemblance to a crewmember, George was the creation of Bil Canfield, Boatswains Mate 1st class and popular ship’s cartoonist, who painted George, riding a projectile, on the starboard side of Turret I. Former crew informed us that as MASSACHUSETTS made her way to the Pacific via the Panama Canal, a violent storm off Cape Hatteras flattened the breakwater on the forecastle and Turret I subsequently flooded. The ship’s force replaced hundreds of feet of cable within the turret, but it was apparently never the same again and experienced mysterious electrical “gremlins” thereafter.

George, pictured here, was incorrectly identified in the ship’s cruise book as being located on the side of Turret II. Careful paint removal several years ago revealed George in his rightful place on Turret I. He is now our mascot and the sponsor of our upcoming Halloween "Gremlin’s Ghoul-A-Palooza!"

18 October 1944 with BIG MAMIE

Off the Philippines with Task Group 38.3, USS Massachusetts BB-59 refuels from oiler USS Kaskaskia AO-27. BIG MAMIE took on 37,553 gallons of fuel oil during this replenishment.

We think the effort on Mount 5 is coming out really well!

The top, left side and front of the Mount have all been stripped to bare steel and coated with two coats of primer. The Left Gun Barrel was also prepped and primed along with the cleaned up tompkins.

Top coat is coming soon and then the Mount will be rotated 180 degrees to undertake the right side.

8 October 1945: The United States Third Fleet was deactivated.
Between its formation under the command of ADM Bill Halsey on 15 March 1943 and when it shot down the last attacking aircraft at 1445 on 15 August 1945, Third Fleet scored a substantial number of victories over the enemy.

USS Massachusetts BB-59 was a major component of the US Third Fleet.

We still have a way to go as we work to preserve and repaint BIG MAMIE's superstructure but efforts the last month have been outstanding. Fresh haze gray can be seen on her after superstructure and directors along with the boat crane due to donations from our supporters. Not to be outdone, volunteer Tom Lowney has most of 5" Mount No 5 prepped and primed.

This battleship is not done yet as we are planning a few more weeks of prepping and painting this season for USS Massachusetts.

Together we are doing great things!
