As I write this from my office at Museums on the Green, I can hear the excitement of Falmouth third graders downstairs visiting the c. 1730 Conant House on a school field trip. One child exclaimed, “This place is so cool,” while another gasped, “Wow, is that a parrot?” To me, that is the sound of history coming alive. It is why this place matters.

Museums are places of discovery and curiosity. They create moments of wonder that can stay with a person for a lifetime. I still remember visiting the historic Winslow House in Marshfield, Massachusetts when I was seven years old with my family. I fell in love with the creaking floors, the aged wallpaper, the portraits watching from the walls, and the unmistakable feeling of stepping into the past. That experience shaped my life and ultimately led me into museum work.

For many of these students, their visit to the Falmouth Historical Society may be their very first experience in a historic museum. We hope it sparks something lasting: a connection to history, a sense of stewardship, and an understanding that preserving the past matters. Every year, we welcome every third grader in the Falmouth Public Schools to Museums on the Green free of charge. These educational programs receive no government or state funding. They are made possible entirely through the generosity of supporters like you.

As we reflect on the nation’s founding and prepare for America 250, we are reminded that philanthropy and civic engagement have always been central to the American story. Supporting local museums, education, and cultural preservation is one of the most meaningful ways we can invest in our community and future generations.

This spring, I hope you will consider making a gift to support the Falmouth Historical Society's appeal and our educational mission. A contribution of $250 in honor of America 250 would be especially meaningful, though gifts of every size make a difference. Your support helps ensure that the next generation will continue to discover, explore, and care about the history that surrounds them.

Thank you for your continued support, we truly appreciate it.

Another group tour came for a visit this week. They were a group of college friends, specifically interested in learning more about Katharine Lee Bates. We're so glad you enjoyed your time with us!

If you have a group that would like a private tour, contact us for more information.

"Dear Rachel, Meg, and Len,

It is with heartfelt gratitude, Rachel, that our Wellesley team sends you HUGE THANKS — and JOY — for arranging such an outstanding and personalized introduction to the Katharine Lee Bates archives collection AND walking tour of her unique life’s history in Falmouth. We deeply appreciate your effort on our behalf to pull together this rare opportunity while we were in town before the seasonal opening. What a fabulous and informative afternoon!

It was a perfect idea to meet first with you, Meg, to gain a perspective of Katharine’s life through your extensive expertise and knowledge of the readings, archives and artifacts in the collection. Your commentary about the written materials and historical relics we viewed provided the introduction to KLB, and set the tone for learning more about her fascinating life. It was a double-y significant enjoyment to learn of your card-carrying membership in Katharine’s — and our — Wellesley sisterhood!

And Len, your fabulous walking tour of KLB’s life in the Village is as much an honor to her as it was a thrill to our group to step into her pathways and gain a greater understanding of her life and contributions to her community, to Wellesley, and to the world. We loved your interesting and enthusiastic commentary while walking along and at each “stop" that provided an excellent word-picture of Katharine’s life in her home town. It was extra meaningful to pause periodically and share the reading of Katharine’s poignant poetry — thank you for including these unique interludes.

And last, but not least, we send a friendly hello to Margaret, having met her in the office that day while working her volunteer shift.

Best wishes to you all for continued success with Museums on the Green and the Falmouth Historical Society!

With warm regards and deepest appreciation from us all."
