Earlier today, we had our two resident T-6 / SNJ / Harvard(s) fly down to the Rush City Fly-In in eastern Minnesota! We had a great time seeing old friends, meeting new ones and showcasing the Fargo Air Museum outside of North Dakota! Enjoy these photos that Max took today of the two in action, and thank you to the owners of these magnificent warbirds for representing the Fargo Air Museum with your planes! ✈️

This week, Max’s takes us back to the collection of Mervin Backman to look at a few more items that he acquired throughout his time in WWII. The first, and arguably the most special of all the items that was donated, was the original wristwatch that Mervin acquired and actually wore throughout the war. On the back, we can see his name, serial number and “Egypt 1942,” possibly denoting when and where he got the watch. Although the leather has long since rotted away, likely from years of being exposed to sweat and the elements both during and after WWII, Mervin saved the watch itself and had it on display in a custom-made viewing container.

The second item is a liberated Italian M1891 bayonet. According to Mervin’s family, he acquired a number of rifles from the enemy during WWII, and had them all shipped home. Today, the family still uses them for deer hunting!
