Hill-Stead is noted for its 1901 33,000-square-foot house filled with art and antiques. Pioneering female architect Theodate Pope Riddle designed the grand house, set on 152 hilltop acres, to showcase the Impressionist masterpieces amassed by her father, Cleveland iron industrialist Alfred A. Hill-Stead is one of the nation’s few remaining representations of early-20th-century Country Place Estate

s. Collections include original furnishings, paintings by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, James M. Whistler and Mary Cassatt, as well as numerous works on paper and Japanese woodblock prints. Stately trees, seasonal gardens, meadows, over three miles of stone walls and blazed hiking trails accent the grounds. A centerpiece of the property is the circa 1920 sunken garden designed by Beatrix Farrand, today the site of the renowned Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. Hill-Stead Grounds are open from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. For tour and program information, visit www.hillstead.org or call 860.677.4787.

Thank you to Frank Kwei for an incredible afternoon this past Sunday, sharing such deep knowledge of tea with us. “Journey Into the World of Tea” was a rich and engaging experience, taking us through the history, culture, and sensory world of tea, with tastings and a special focus on Japanese tea traditions. Thank you as well to everyone who joined us and made the event so memorable.

Presented in conjunction with our exhibition The Great Wave: Japonisme at Hill-Stead. We are also grateful to our exhibition sponsors—Susan R. Chandler, DesignSourceCT LLC, The Roberts Foundation for the Arts, the Sharon Stotz Object Conservation Fund, and a private foundation—whose support makes programs like this possible.

Today marks the anniversary of the opening of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a celebration of one of New York’s great cultural institutions and its enduring commitment to scholarship and access to art.

Yesterday, we were honored to welcome John Carpenter, the Met’s Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese Art, to Hill-Stead to speak about the Japanese works of art in our collection. It was an incredible opportunity to connect and deepen our understanding of these extraordinary works through shared expertise.

Moments like this remind us how meaningful institutional partnerships can be, bringing fresh perspectives, fostering dialogue, and expanding the stories we tell through art. We’re so grateful for the exchange and look forward to many more conversations to come.
