!

During World War 2, the United States military used dogs in many roles including patrol, guard, mine and enemy detection. The Army even called for civilian owners to donate dogs for these purposes. They specifically requested German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Belgian sheepdogs, and collies, to name a few.
During the island-hopping campaign (pictured below) they were especially useful because the climate, weather, and geography of the islands made it difficult for soldiers and Marines to find where the enemy was hiding. Having dogs with a patrol increased the chances of finding the enemy and protecting from traps.
Don’t forget our Trunk or Treat theme this year is Animals in the military! So when you come October 23, bring your pet!
