Operation Eagle Claw (Persian: عملیات پنجه عقاب) was a failed United States Department of Defense attempt to rescue 53 embassy staff held captive by Revolutionary Iran on 24 April 1980. It was ordered by U.S. president Jimmy Carter after the staff were seized at the Embassy of the United States, Tehran. The operation, one of Delta Force's first, encountered many obstacles and failures and was subsequently aborted.[1] Eight helicopters were sent to the first staging area in Great Salt Desert called Desert One, but only five arrived in operational condition.[2] One had encountered hydraulic problems, another was caught in a sand storm, and the third showed signs of a cracked rotor blade. During the operational planning, it was decided that the mission would be aborted if fewer than six helicopters remained operational upon arrival at the Desert One site, despite only four being absolutely necessary.[2] The field commanders advised President Carter to abort the mission, which he did.[3]

As the US forces prepared to withdraw from Desert One, one of the remaining helicopters crashed into a transport aircraft that contained both servicemen and jet fuel. The resulting fire destroyed both aircraft and killed eight servicemen.[2]

Colonel Charlie Beckwith Founder and First Commanding Officer of 1st SFOD-Delta Delta Force...His British Camouflage Uniform Smock...Photos include his field gear grouping from Operation Eagle Claw...This grouping is historically significant in several ways and I am pleased to have the opportunity to add the grouping to my collection of Col. Beckwith's guns and Delta Force related fi****ms several of which I posted elsewhere.

As a vocal proponent of British SAS tactics and organization, Col. Beckwith utilized much of SAS doctrine during his planning and subsequent organization of what would become Delta Force in the late 1970s. His dedication to forming a premier elite unit within the US Army was nothing short of remarkable for its audacity and eventual establishment overcoming incredible obstacles for the many years he worked to form the unit.

He is well known in Special Operations, of course, but the link below gives a brief biography of his life and service history.

WWII German Police Eagle/C Issue Walther PPK Pistol with scarce gray bakelite grips.

The Walther PPK with gray grips is a highly rare and collectible variation of the iconic German police pistol, primarily manufactured during World War II between 1943 and 1944. While the vast majority of PPKs (approximately 98%) were produced with black or brown Bakelite grips, the gray-mottled or solid gray versions are considered "ultra-rare" and highly desirable by collectors.

Key Characteristics & Historical Context

Police Markings: These pistols were typically issued to the N**i police force and are identified by an Eagle/C acceptance mark on the left side of the frame.

Production Era: Gray grips generally appear on later-war production models (1943–1944).

Grip Material: They are made of a gray mottled Bakelite, which can vary in tone from light gray to versions with blueish tints or "swirls".

Rarity: It is estimated that only about 13,000–13,500 of the late-war milled finish police PPKs were made, with only a fraction of those featuring the gray grip.
