As we get closer to the World Cup festivities happening in the area, the Fife History Museum would like to share Fife's link to the soccer world:

Discover the incredible journey of Don Paul, the Fife High School athlete who played for the Cleveland Browns before becoming the visionary General Manager who founded the Portland Timbers and coined the iconic nickname “Soccer City.”

Fife High School!

Fife High School!

Students from Fife High School took over the dance floor of the Crystal Ballroom in the Winthrop Hotel to "Shake, rattle and roll" on April 18, 1970, for their annual Junior-Senior prom. About 50 couples attended the spring function with girls dressed in long formals with corsages and boys in suits and ties.

On this date in 1935, Walt Disney released a "Silly Symphonies" animated short based on the children's story "The Robber Kitten". A book that was written by Robert Michael Ballantyne originally published in 1858, and republished by the McLoughlin Brothers in 1886.

The Fife History Museum has this heavily damaged copy of the McLoughlin Bros publication. Interestingly enough, it was printed on linen!

What's more interesting is to read the text and realize that this book, as written, would never make school or children's shelves today. What starts with a runaway kitten, progresses to violence, attempted theft, and more violence. The kitten ends up loosing a fight with a robber dog and then decides being good at home isn't a bad thing.

The Disney version is much more tame. You can see the video here: https://dai.ly/x8j11da

Another Fantastic Find (tm) at the Fife History Museum! This time we have unearthed a very. Thick. Album full of post cards from the late 1890s to early 1900s! Many have been sent through the mail, but others were just collected. They span many different world's fairs and expos and show local history through photos, such as this of the original Wa State Capitol building and Multnomah Falls BEFORE the walking bridge was built.

Enjoy the photos!
