Flagstaff Auto Museum The Flagstaff Auto Museum is the first major project of the Classic Automobile Restoration and Education Society. C.A.R.E.S.

Flagstaff Auto Museum is a project of the Classic Automobile Restoration & Education Society, whose mission is to preserve, restore, and share automotive heritage in America. mission is to preserve, restore, and share automotive heritage and arts in America. Formed in April 2021, the museum project is in its' infancy, and is seeking supporters, volunteers, sponsors, and board members at this time.

Flagstaff Auto Museum has already launched our Classic Car Garage Project as an after-school enrichment program in the Fall of 2021. The Auto Museum’s mission is to provide insight-filled instruction in automotive technology and classic car mechanics, giving students skills in welding, painting, and fabrication. Currently, there is a Chevy 350 engine at Coconino High School that is to be restored by the Auto Shop students as a project for the museum, and the Auto Shop Teacher is one of our board members. The goal: guide students down career paths while developing in them an appreciation for automotive history, as well as the soft skills of personal responsibility, consistent attendance, and the importance of personal presentation. Students will leave the Classic Car Garage program with a resume, a portfolio, and personal letters of recommendation—as well as self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Another important mission of the Museum is to preserve the Route 66 history and culture and share that history with the youth of the community. Teaching the next generations how to care for and even just driving a classic car, so that they can become "Certified Drivers", and take elderly community members out for their groceries or errands in a classic car that they connect with. Our goal is to have a place for family gatherings, car shows, and any community events.

Here is very early unpaved Route 66 near Lebanon, Missouri circa 1926. This is now East Elm in Lebanon, MO. We have people ask us questions about how much Route 66 was paved in its early days and this quote should help a little.
"December 15,1929 The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Route 66 was paved in Illinois and Kansas. About 2/3 of the route in Missouri was paved. The highway was completely unpaved in Texas. Just 64 miles of the 1,221 miles between New Mexico and California was paved."
This photo and verbiage in quotes are courtesy of Joe Sonderman.
