Stop by and see what's happening at Pope's Tavern! We hope to have the kitchen herb garden, an interpretive and educational space, completed by the end of April. Additionally, the brush arbor for the outdoor classroom space will be complete by the summer.
Oh, and before it's too late...check out the archaeology site in the courtyard where staff and volunteers uncovered a previously undocumented building.

FLORENCE — One of the city's most historic locations is getting an outdoor makeover through an ongoing landscaping program.

Mark your calendars and register to reserve a spot! These Alabama Plant Series Classes are coming up!

Summer McCreless will be hosting the next two APS classes at Pope's Tavern Museum. A class on Herbal Medicine will take place this Sunday, March 8th at 1pm, and the next class after that will be about Soap Making, on Sunday, March 22nd at 1pm.

Nadene Mairesse will be hosting the last workshop of this series on Sunday, March 29th at 1pm. This will be a Dye + Print with Native Plants workshop, which will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about historical dyeing processes. Participants will dye and paint 2-3 pieces of 12" square cotton muslin which they can use as quiltblocks, cushion covers, or framed wall hangings.

Students will be introduced to the history of plant based dyes and guided through historical dyeing processes including mordanting (preparation) of the cloth to creation of the dye bath using foraged native plants such as Osage Orange, Staghorn Sumac and Black Walnut. Nadene will give an overview of native Alabama dye plants and tips on foraging responsibly. As their textiles are soaking up the plant dye, students will mix mineral based paints to apply pattern to their dyed cotton cloth. Nadene will then explain how to finish the dyed textile pieces to ensure color and lightfastness.

The Alabama Plant Series is a set of five workshops hosted at Pope’s Tavern Museum. These workshops are meant to draw the connections between Native American cultures, Alabama plants, and the products created by people that are rooted in early traditions.

All of these events will cost $20 per participant and will take place at Pope’s Tavern Museum, 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL. Pope’s Tavern is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am until 4pm, and is located at 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL 35630. For questions, call : (256) 760-6379 or email: [email protected].

We stumbled upon a cistern at Pope's Tavern in the fall of 2023, having no prior knowledge that it was there. The cistern provided an opportunity for us to learn more about the people who lived in the building now known as Pope's Tavern. Archaeology at Pope's Tavern, a public archaeology program, excavated through the first several feet of the cistern. Items uncovered included articles of clothing; auto parts; glass bottles; ceramics; and items commonly associated with household refuse. Unable to physically dig further than about 5 feet below the surface, we used an auger to determine the depth and composition of the entire cistern, which turned out to be roughly 20 feet below the surface. Items in the cistern were likely deposited there in the 1940's by the Lambeth family, who lived in the building from the 1870s through 1965.

Museum staff decided to preserve the cistern as an interpretive display, covering it with a pavilion, enclosing it with a fence, and creating a sign to explain its purpose.
We are grateful for all the volunteers who worked on this; the curious passersby who stopped to check it out; the architect who drew up the plans; and the builders for their excellent work. Stop by and check it out when it's completed!
