"A TICKET TO FREEDOM: THE BOWNE HOUSE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD LETTER AT 175"

🗓 When: Sunday, September 28, 2025 at 1:00pm

🏠 Where: Bowne House Historical Society at 37-01 Bowne Street, Flushing, New York 11354

🎟 Tickets are purchased at the door. $10 per Attendee; $5 for Members.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Join us at Bowne House this Sunday, September 28th to learn all about our “Underground Railroad letter,” which was carried here by a freedom-seeker fleeing slavery 175 years ago on this date. Bowne House archivist Charlotte Jackson’s informal talk and slideshow will offer the most in-depth look yet at the rare handwritten note that finally confirmed the long-rumored place of the house and family on the Underground Railroad.

Ms. Jackson will dig into the back story: the people, places, and historical moment connected to this precious document, written just 10 days after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of how Flushing and Long Island figured on the path to freedom and an appreciation for the diverse communities that historically lived here.

A question-and-answer period and discussion will follow; a tour of the 1661 historic home is included.
