1980-3-15: After weeks of swirling trade rumors and speculation, The Oakland Raiders sent quarterback Ken Stabler down South to Houston in exchange for quarterback Dan Pastorini. Both quarterbacks had insisted on a change of scenery which both received.
Raiders head coach Tom Flores had seen this kind of trade before back in 1967. He was the Raiders starting quarterback but was traded to Buffalo for the “Mad Bomber” Daryle Lamonica. Now 13 years later, history appeared to be repeating itself.
Al Davis, Raiders principal owner & general manager, had been in love with the long ball his entire tenure in Oakland. Regarding the trade, Davis said, “I’ve always had great admiration for Pastorini’s ability. He can throw the deep ball, and he is a courageous football player. We really want to go back to that (the deep pass). Yes, Pastorini is more of a Lamonica type than Stabler.”
Stabler had been wanting out of Oakland since Davis publicly criticized the former NFL MVP quarterback back at the end of the 1978 NFL season. Once former Raiders head coach John Madden retired, it was felt that Stabler’s days in Oakland were numbered.
Stabler told reporters, “I’ve wanted to be traded and I’m glad that it’s over, because it’s been hell. I felt it was in my best interest and the Raiders best interest that I play somewhere else. Going to Houston is a great chance to play on a talented team with a great chance to make it to the Super Bowl.”
