In November 2005, U.S. Army Soldiers in the Iraq theater of operations as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom developed the first field-expedient Rhino Predetonation System to protect them against specific types of IEDs that were being deployed by enemy forces at the time. Constructed from a simple 7.62 mm ammunition box equipped with a diesel engine glow plug, these early versions were already reaching U.S. Army units by December - providing a timely and low-cost method to counter a deadly threat.

As the system progressed, enhanced Rhino “heater boxes” were mounted in a horizontal flag assembly on vehicles to emit heat signatures, triggering Passive Infrared (PIR) Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) before troops entered the kill zone. Between 2005 and 2011, the produced and deployed over 37,000 Rhino Systems across various units.

This specific heater box on display in the Changing World Gallery, was attached to a Stryker vehicle with 3rd Platoon, Bull Company, 1-2 Stryker Cavalry Regiment when it was triggered by an IED blast in Adhamiyah, Baghdad on December 8, 2007. The visible battle damage helps communicate to Museum visitors the destructive impact of IEDs that characterized the war in Iraq and the importance of Soldier-led initiatives in saving lives.

in 1918, the U.S. Army fought its first battle of near Cantigny, France. Soldiers from the 28th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, advanced under a rolling artillery barrage to seize a small German-held salient along the front lines.

With French artillery and air support, American forces repelled a strong German counterattack later that afternoon. Two days later, the U.S. Army secured victory by holding off German forces and pushing the Allied front line forward by a mile.

Though smaller in scale compared to the larger battles at Château-Thierry and Belleau Wood just weeks later, Cantigny marked a vital turning point - demonstrating the strength and capability of the American Expeditionary Forces and establishing American troops as a crucial part of the Allied war effort.

Maryland-born James Wilkinson fought as an officer in key battles and later rose to become the commanding general of the U.S. Army.

But behind his uniform was a darker truth…Wilkinson was also a paid spy for Spain.

In a fierce power struggle with Andrew Jackson to control Southern command during the War of 1812, Wilkinson secretly sold military intelligence to America's enemies and engaged in conspiracies along the Mississippi River. Theodore Roosevelt, called him “the most despicable character in our history.”

How does a lifelong Soldier betray his own country?

Join Museum educator John Maass as he explores the shocking story of ambition, deception and treason.

The Society for History in the Federal Government recently honored the Museum’s special exhibition, “CALL TO Arms: The Soldier and the Revolutionary War," with their 2026 Historic Preservation and Exhibitions Award – recognizing exemplary practices, the quality of historical research and interpretation, and a high level of technical expertise in the field of historic preservation.

The Society’s Leslie and Alexander Poster presented the award to Museum Director Paul Morando during their annual meeting at the Library of Congress on May 14.

“This recognition is an honor and further validates the Museum’s commitment to preserve, interpret, and exhibit invaluable artifacts,” said Morando. “The rarity of the artifacts curated for ‘CALL TO Arms’ is breathtaking, and to have them brought together in this public display is something that may never occur again.”
