Two quick things:

1) We hope you are all well and keeping safe. Wear your mask, please.

2) Although our in-person presentations are on hold at the moment due to Covid-19 spread, we're preparing alternatives to keep sharing History.

We are pleased to announce that two of our great friends at the FLHS, Drs. Harry Laver and Greg Hospodor from the Department of Military History at CGSC, will feature as on-screen historical talent in the three-part History Channel miniseries "Grant," with the first segment airing tonight at 8PM CST.

There has been a great deal of speculation. Some say that Dr. Hospodor is, in fact, the actor playing Grant. Others note that Dr. Laver is becoming chummy with executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio and might leave CGSC to pursue his stage/screen ambition. We'll all have to watch and see.

Hello all. Due to emerging concerns about the COVID-19 Coronavirus and out of an abundance of caution, the Fort Leavenworth Historical Society has made the difficult decision to postpone this evening's presentation at the Leavenworth Public Library. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to rescheduling Kelly’s Heroes as soon a practicable.

Thank you in advance for your understanding. Now go disinfect something - and please be safe.

Big news, people: Stage and screen icon Donald Sutherland - "Oddball" from Kelly's Heroes - will be with us TOMORROW!

Well, perhaps. Probably not.

In any case, the Johnson/Linhart duo will certainly be presenting an expert yet highly entertaining look at the History vs. Hollywood of that cinema classic. Join us. &PM at the Leavenworth Public Library. Just follow Oddball. He knows the way.

Two quick things. First, the poster is here for Kelly's Heroes. It's awesome.

Second, the award nominees were announced last night for awesomiest military moustache in an equestrian category. This German Uhlan from 1914 is but one of several finalists. Horses are difficult to impress, as may be observed here.

This just in, from 75 years ago tomorrow. Seriously, can no one take time to brush the coat, pick the hooves, and comb the mane? 😀

From our friends at the Riverfront Community Center: The First City Film Festival on 28 March.

Here at the FLHS home office, we're obviously fans of film, particularly of the historical type.

Funny you mentioned historical films...because we're on the same wavelength. Spooky. Join us at 7PM on Thursday, March 12th for the latest installment of our multiple Nobel Prize-winning series, History vs. Hollywood.

We all know Kelly's Heroes was pretty much a documentary, right?

It's tough to find words superlative enough to accompany what is going to happen on 12 March at 7PM at the Leavenworth Public Library. But we'll try.

For one night only, the scholarly comedic duo of FLHS President Chris Johnson and Gary Linhart - formerly roommates at West Point in what we estimate was probably the 1950s - present our latest offering of History vs. Hollywood: Kelly's Heroes.

If you have anything else scheduled for that evening, cancel it. You'll be glad you did. Now then, on to the posters...

Also, you get extra points and bragging rights for naming three or more films which featured German actor Karl-Otto Alberty.

So here's a fun fact: while the true identity of the Man in the Iron Mask (the movie about whom is the subject of our award-winning History vs. Hollywood series on February 13th) is a mystery, this was not the only time that a nameless prisoner was kept confined for most of his adult life.

Ivan VI came to the Romanov throne in 1740 at age 2 months. He was deposed one year later and spent the remainder of his life in total isolation on the orders of Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, never educated, and only seeing his jailer. Called "the nameless one," he was killed at age 23 by his guards when a group of army officers attempted to rescue him. Lesson: being a Romanov is risky.

Now back to The Man in the Iron Mask. Who was he? The rightful King of France? Did the Alexandre Dumas book get it right? Did Leonardo DiCaprio? Did Richard Chamberlain?

So many questions that demand answers. Dr. Jonathan Abel has them. Come and find out. 7PM, 13 February at the Leavenworth Public Library.

Pssst. Here's what's coming next. Pass it on.
