Fort Loudoun was built in 1756 by the colony of Pennsylvania, served as a supply depot during the French and Indian War, was the site of the Cherokee Indian council of 1758, and it was the site of a pre-Rev War uprising, the Black Boys Rebellion of 1765.

Strong medicine at Fort Loudoun….

The hawk holds an important and integral place in Cherokee culture and spirituality. They are seen as keen-sighted observers and messengers that connect the physical world with higher spiritual awareness and vision, and are regarded by the Cherokee as a sacred protector spirit. The Tlanuwa is a legendary, immense, mythical hawk of Cherokee mythology. One of the traditional seven clans of the Cherokee is the Hawk Clan.

Thanks to a grant from Americana Corner, and in commemoration of the Cherokee and Catawba involvement and presence of the tribe at Fort Loudoun in 1757 and 1758, we are creating a permanent Cherokee Summer House exhibit at the site. Yesterday I stopped by the fort site to check on some things, and as I neared the summer house project site, there, sitting on the top ridge pole of the underway project, stood this magnificent bird. I can’t help but think it was there for a reason, a messenger perhaps, between the site and the spiritual world, conveying approval for the work we’re doing there. Fort Loudoun PA Americana Corner

The Cherokee Summer House is moving along at Fort Loudoun PA. The Wednesday Warriors are working hard on this great new feature at the site. We have also been in consultation with the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation regarding the project. The Cherokee Summer House is made possible by a grant from Americana Corner. Thank you!

The first two photos, show the beauty of the Conococheague after a rain, that brought an abundance to replenish the water table.
The third photo shows the progress of the Cherokee Summer House, as it's getting started! Thank you is due to the Wednesday Warriors for the work they've put into this project thus far. Those posts are trees that were cut down and debarked by our hard-working volunteers!

The garden had some much needed weeding done today. Some of the Lambsquarters were 6 feet tall. We are very grateful for the abundance of rain lately! It may have been a nuisance at times but surely proved to be a helping hand to our produce. Our squash is producing consistently and the potatoes were dug today!

The Wednesday Warriors were adding chinking to the Officer's Quarters. Fireplace is almost complete. The mantel needs added. It is looking pretty fantastic! We can't wait till it's complete!

These are the surprise garden items mentioned in a previous post. They are almost complete! A volunteer and board member is currently coil weaving the last one. They have been a month in the making. We can't wait to display our BEE SKEPS! Hopefully they can be used and not for just interpretation.
These skeps can cause a large number of bees to be destroyed in obtaining the comb and honey, which is not something we would want to do. Also, swarms usually have a 3 to 4 mile radius. We certainly would not want to take from bee boxes in the area closest to us.

Our garden has squash, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots ready to harvest! The weeds may have taken over a little bit BUT our plants are green and thriving! ALSO we have a fun addition to our garden area coming that you should be sure to check out on your next trip over here.
