Executive director J. Marshall Adams returned to the Coral Gables Museum last week with a public program to help close out their special exhibition "Coral Gables Collects: Beanie Backus and His Imprint in South Florida through the Allen Morris Collection."

His presentation “Seeing Old Florida in a New Light” widened the horizon by exploring the compelling stories behind the celebrated works of Backus and of the Highwaymen artists, the vanishing landscapes they immortalized, and a legacy that continues to speak to future generations.

Special thanks to executive director Elvis Fuentes, director of administration and learning Oliver Gorf, director of curatorial programs Yuneikys Villalonga, and of course to Allen Morris for keeping — and sharing — his extraordinary family collection of peerless paintings by Bean Backus.

While their special exhibition has concluded, you can ALWAYS enjoy the art of these artists on display here!

👁️📷 | 2026 DIRECTOR’S CHOICE — “Sanctuary of Light” by Albert Lim

Sometimes you have to rise above and cultivate patience to find your moment.

Almost exactly 200 years ago, at the dawn of using light and chemicals to capture time, the world of photography was only black and white. And in those long-ago days before color could be conjured, artists instinctively responded to this limitation. Then, and now, they understood how to orchestrate the contrasts in darkness and grace notes of light; they even had a word for it handed down from the Renaissance: chiaroscuro (Italian for “light-dark”).

Albert Lim’s eyes were open in this church in Prague, Czech Republic, and his mind in monochrome mode as he observed the afternoon light quietly falling from the tall windows upon the contrasting patterns of low tilework. Sensing a higher vantage point might reveal more, he found his way to a second-floor balcony. With echoes of voices and footfalls drifting in the air, he waited. From here, the light casts a gentle lacework of honeycomb on the wooden pews, the geometries of diamonds alternate and fold into a mosaic of tessellations, and the ornate sculpted saints and other figures of adoration can be just barely seen, silently keeping vigil as the hours wind down and the earth begins its turn toward night.

As the tides of tourism below flowed and ebbed, a small group of visitors moved into the center of his vision, making their own vacation memories. He emerged from the shadows to use his camera to catch a balanced, ethereal sense of contrast, not only in light and dark, but in stillness and motion, in above and below, in the normalness of living and the wonder of life. A sliver of time drawn by light, inviting us to be present in every moment.

“Through the Eye of the Camera” is on view through June 19. You can experience 81 extraordinary images by artists whose creative medium is digital and traditional photography. While this one was my choice, you can be a judge and vote for your favorite to earn the People’s Choice award at the end of the exhibition.

DID YOU KNOW: The A.E. Backus Museum is a Blue Star Museum, a sixteen-year collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and museums across the United States to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families, starting on Armed Services Day, May 16, 2026 and continuing through Labor Day, September 7, 2026.

"The Backus Museum is proud to participate in this national program to honor the service of the military with increased access for family members," said J. Marshall Adams, Executive Director. "The artists at the core of our mission served their country in wartime and peace — Bean Backus during the Second World War, and later several of the younger Highwaymen painters also served their country in the armed forces. Today as a Blue Star Museum, we are pleased to thank our military families for their service, and share with them the cultural treasures of our community."

Blue Star Museums include art, science and history museums, children’s museums, zoos, gardens, lighthouses and more, and exist in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the Backus Museum, Blue Star families can enjoy access to the special exhibition "Through the Eye of the Camera" (May 15 - June 19), as well as the permanent collection and display of works by A.E. Backus and of the Florida Highwaymen painters during regular season schedule and summer hours.

The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military — Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force, members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps and up to five family members. To obtain free access, visit the front desk with relevant ID.

A list of participating museums nationwide is available here: https://www.arts.gov/blue-star-museums-map
