Bourbon County Historical Preservation Association

Bourbon County Historical Preservation Association Historic Preservation Association Of Bourbon County Kansas Have you been to Valley Forge, Gettysburg, St. Louis, Grand Canyon, Stonehenge, Rome, or Boston? O.

President’s Message
Have you ever considered the impact of history and the people who interpret the subject? People go to these places to see the “original,” rather than a “picture of” or a replica. Your HPA’s objective is to preserve and support these ideals whenever possible in Bourbon County. We have worked and will continue to work to preserve the original when and where possible. Our efforts

are reflected in the programs we present at the Congregational Church and other programs we support for the good of Bourbon County. This effort takes time, people, and money. Our membership year now matches the calendar year: January to January. Please check one of the sealing tabs on this letter and your checkbook register to see if your dues are current. If your 2022 dues are unpaid, please return the form on the back of this newsletter with your dues. You will be helping us preserve our history for future generations, so they can enjoy the "real thing." The original is always more exciting than a photograph or replica. On the subject of needing people, the HPA Board is looking for two people to act as Membership Co-Chairs. Membership dues, along with the rent paid for use of the Old Congregational Church, and sale of our cards, books, and photographs, provide the funding for maintenance of the Church and the Depot, grants to business owners for downtown historic building façade renovation, honoraria for special presentations, cost of printing and mailing newsletters, and bookkeeping. Please join us by volunteering your time and money to preserve our heritage. Respects, Brian Allen

Membership is open to all interested in preserving the history of Bourbon County. Dues run from January 1 through December 31 of each year. They may be paid at the annual meeting or mailed to:

P. Box 45
Fort Scott, Kansas 66701

This wedding dress was worn by Nanna Gunn on 6-17-1908. Her daughter and grand-daughter also wore the dress in their weddings. Today, the dress was taken off the mannequin and is heading back to the Calhoun family to be used once again. It has been our collection since 1987. So proud to get it back to the family to spend the rest of its life with them.

These 4 murals hung in the auditorium of the Junior High for many years. They were saved from the dumpster a few years ago, and are now in the process of getting new glass for their frames. According to Fred Campbell, they were made by an art teacher in the late 1930's. They stand 6 feet tall.
