Last weekend, the Modern hosted Serbian sound artist Ivana Dama as part of Rashid Johnson, “Stage,” 2026. Throughout the run of the special exhibition “Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers,” a site-specific stage located in front of the Modern’s auditorium features both programmed performances and spontaneous activations.

Dama’s performances presented two different approaches to sound amplification. In “Echoes of Urgencies,” seen here, Dama revisited Cold War-era tools for public warning devices (e.g., klaxons, horns, alarms) and recontextualized them as free-form musical instruments, using various air pressure tools to manipulate custom-made siren disks.

Do you have an almost 5-year-old at home? We have a few spots left for Summer Art Camp, during the week beginning June 8. Scholarships are available!

Art campers spend time in the galleries and on the museum grounds exploring art and architecture, followed by sessions in the museum studio with artist-instructors. The final day of camp concludes with a reception and exhibition of campers’ artwork, when campers celebrate their creative accomplishments with family and friends.

The Modern has appointed Clarissa Morales as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Morales joins the Modern from the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, where, as Deputy Director, she implemented transformative systems and policies to elevate artistic and operational outcomes. Morales will begin her role at the Modern on July 1. She is the first person to hold this position at the museum.

As COO, Morales will be a key member of the museum’s leadership team, providing strategic leadership and oversight of museum operations as well as working closely with the Director and staff to further the museum’s mission and vision.

“We are delighted to welcome Clarissa to the Modern in the newly created role of COO. She brings key knowledge of optimizing museum operations to align with institutional goals, and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence. From a pool of highly qualified candidates, Clarissa stood out as a dynamic and transformational leader with demonstrated experience steering complex operations for world class art museums,” stated Dr. Halona Norton-Westbrook, Director.

Throughout the run of the special exhibition “Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers,” a site-specific stage located in front of the Modern’s auditorium features both programmed performances and spontaneous activations. Throughout the run of the special exhibition “Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers,” a site-specific stage located in front of the Modern’s auditorium features both programmed performances and spontaneous activations. Join us on Friday, May 22 at 2 pm and Saturday, May 23 at 3 pm for free performances by Serbian sound artist Ivana Dama.

These performances present two different approaches to sound amplification. Dama’s first performance, “Echoes of Urgencies,” revisits Cold War-era tools for public warning devices (e.g., klaxons, horns, alarms) and recontextualizes them through custom-made “siren disks” as free-form musical instruments. In “Figures in Air,” Dama blurs the lines between microphone, sound, amplifier, and audience via a unique, theremin-like instrument. With it, the artist’s soundless gestures are ascribed to different frequencies and pitches, disrupting spaces through paradoxical acts that are both silent and musical.

Today, we celebrate the remarkable art, vision and legacy of Aubrey Williams (1926-1990) who was born in Guyana . Williams developed a powerful visual language that moved between abstraction and figuration, grounded in a profound awareness of humanity’s relationship to the environment, history, and the cosmos.

Last year, the Modern’s exhibition “Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling” celebrated the work of Williams and Bowling (b. 1934), two tour de force artists exhibited together as a duo for the first time, and highlighted their respective contributions to the story of post-World War II abstract painting.
