Since 1993 the CR Smith Museum has offered a dynamic learning environment in which exhibitions and educational programs excite and engage visitors of all ages. Through hands-on, immersive experiences it helps to broaden the community’s understanding of commercial aviation, airline operations and the larger impact of flight and air transportation on our world. While the history and accomplishments

of American Airlines are the predominant ways in which these subjects are illustrated, the Museum also uses its collections, special exhibition, and educational programs to educate school children and teens, families, and life-long learners, about the science, technology and history of aviation in general and in the Dallas/Fort Worth region specifically. The Museum is committed to being a primary resource for education in North Texas and to this end paces science and social studies learning into an historical context by relating and illustrating the accomplishments of the airline industry in the region and human stories of creativity and technological advancement. Using exhibits to relay the current and historic accomplishments of the men and women involved in revolutionizing the aerospace industry with emphasis on the contributions of those associated with American Airlines, the Museum has created a platform illustrating the science that makes flight and space exploration possible; infuses science, technology, engineering and math (STEM subjects) education through entertainment throughout the galleries; and inspires the next generation of scientists, engineers, pilots, technical experts, and entrepreneurs. The Museum brings history to life and makes scientific concepts easily understood and is a wonderful example of why museums have become one of the most effective means of providing informal education, especially to pre-K through grade 12 students. It offers a powerful social environment for learning and support for schools and teachers as they strive to meet the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum. Through hands-on, activity-based exhibits and programs museums have been shown to spur creativity and innovation and improve empirical thinking, communication skills, and literacy. Museum experiences are enjoyable, lead to measurable increases in motivation among those who visit especially children, and introduce and encourage students’ interest in careers in the subjects of their collections – in this case, the air transportation industry.

Book a flight because today is travel and tourism day! Passengers fly for all sorts of reasons: business trips, vacations, family visits and even just for fun. But here at the museum, we recognize the people who keep the planes running with our “Why I Fly” film. This film is a 14-minute-long movie that interviews airline employees and explains their stories and the meaning that travel holds in their lives.

Interested in seeing this movie at the museum? It plays every 30 minutes in the museum’s theater and is included in admission. Purchase tickets online or in person to watch.

From virtual camper to volunteer.

Yoav Cisneros first joined the CR Smith Museum’s Aviation STEM Camp in 2020 and it changed the course of his life. Six years later, the 16-year-old student is back—this time as a volunteer for the camp that helped shape his dream of becoming a pilot and aerospace engineer. A true “full circle moment.”

Pictured is Yoav and his brother during their time at camp together in 2024.

It’s here at the museum! In April 1971, American Airlines introduced new lounge spaces inside the Boeing 747. This innovation introduced the Coach Lounge which was advertised to be bigger than most living rooms at the time. Would you fly in the Coach Lounge?

Can’t get enough of vintage planes? Visit the museum to see American’s own Flagship Knoxville DC-3 in the hangar. Tickets are available online or in person.

Today is the 100th anniversary of American Airlines 🎂. On April 15, 1926, the first regularly scheduled flight for Robertson Aircraft Corporation, a predecessor of American Airlines, included a bag of U.S. mail in a DH-4 biplane from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri. From carrying mail to carrying passengers, creating the first airport lounge and rewarding loyal customers, American evolved the industry.

Want to learn more about the last 100 years of American? Visit the museum's permanent historical exhibition in the museum by purchasing tickets in person or through the link in bio.
