This Memorial Day, we are sharing “Benediction” by Daniel Chester French in gratitude for the sacrifice and service of the men and women of our armed forces. The statuette was designed by French as a study for a monument honoring soldiers who lost their lives during WWI.

Daniel Chester French (1850–1931), “Benediction,” 1922, bronze, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas, Purchase with funds provided by the Council, 2005.1

As we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re highlighting Filipino American artist Stephanie Syjuco. Syjuco works across mediums, creating photographs, sculptures, and installations through methods ranging from handcrafts to archival excavations and digital editing. In recent years, she has focused on interrupting and challenging narratives of national history and identity.

Syjuco’s 2022 site-specific installation at the Carter, “Stephanie Syjuco: Double Vision,” transformed images of renowned works from the Museum’s collection to reconsider mythologies of the American West, revealing how the presentation of these works can perpetuate colonial lore. Revisit "Double Vision” through a virtual exhibition experience via our website: https://www.cartermuseum.org/exhibitions/stephanie-syjuco-double-vision

"I watched the movie "Convoy" in China long before setting foot in the American West, captivated by its endless highways stretching into the unknown. After moving to the U.S. and immersing myself in these vast landscapes, my understanding deepened. Beyond the cinematic grandeur, I began to see quiet, often overlooked stories tucked into empty roads and open spaces. The lone truck—like others in my paintings—represents more than a vehicle; it carries the humanity behind it: the weight of time, self-reliance, perseverance, and the enduring pursuit of freedom that defines the American West." — Z. Z. Wei

What quiet, overlooked stories will you find in the works of art in "New Horizons: The Western Landscape?" The exhibition is on view at the Carter through May 24, 2026.
