At the New England Ski Museum, we are committed to honoring the past while fueling the future of our sport. Two of the ways we do this are through the historic Golden Ski Award and the Cal Conniff Grant program.

The Golden Ski Award, first established in 1969, is the oldest honor for junior alpine racers in the United States, recognizing the top junior male and female alpine racers in the Eastern United States. Looking through the past Golden Ski Award winners features notable Olympians and US Ski Team racers with New England roots who were awarded right here in Franconia, like Ryan Cochran-Siegle (2010-2012), Mikaela Shiffrin (2011-2013), and Alice Merryweather (2014), right up to our three-time consecutive winner, Annika Hunt (2023-2025). The historic trophy was actually lost in 1975, but it was rediscovered among donations to the museum in 2007, allowing us to proudly revive the tradition.

To support the next generation of pioneers, our Cal Conniff Grant program provides direct financial assistance to individuals and organizations working on projects that preserve ski history, support youth skiing development, or promote the sport in New England.

Mark your calendars for two incredible events happening this June at the New England Ski Museum.

Join us at our Franconia Branch on Tue, June 23 from 4-6 PM to experience our new exhibit, Ski Liftology, and honor this years Golden Ski Award and Cal Conniff Grant award winners, while celebrating our long-time employees, Kay Kerr and Donna Kay Erwin, who recently retired this past winter. Come help us celebrate their incredible years of service and dedication to preserving our region's skiing heritage.

Then, join us as we kick off our speaker series in North Conway on Thu, June 25, from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm with Hilary McCloy sharing her experience on "How Getting Strong for Skiing Makes Skiing Better." This talk will explain how our bodies work while skiing, which muscles need to be strong to resist gravity and how increased strength can reduce injury.

Events are free for members. For non-members a $10 donation per event is suggested and helps us to bring more events to our museums. New events are being added continually, check our website for additional listings as they are scheduled.

This Memorial Day, the New England Ski Museum pauses to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

We hold a special place in our hearts for the soldiers of the legendary 10th Mountain Division and all service members who left their homes and families to defend our country, never to return. Their courage, sacrifice, and spirit are forever carved into our history.

Today, we remember. We honor. We are forever grateful.

Which came first: The 10th Mountain Division or the National Ski Patrol System Inc ? 🤔❄️

Most people guess the 10th Mountain Division, but the answer actually began on the slopes of Vermont.

In 1936, a broken ankle on Mt. Mansfield inspired Minnie Dole to envision a safer mountain, leading to the founding of the National Ski Patrol in 1938. Just a few years later, he used that same organization to convince the War Department that "soldiers on skis" were a tactical necessity.

In July of 1940, Minnie Dole first wrote to President Roosevelt offering the National Ski Patrol's help to recruit and train the troops. The 10th Mountain Division was formally activated in 1943.

The NSP didn't just pre-date the 10th Mountain—they actually recruited them. As we celebrate Military Appreciation Month, we invite you to explore the legacy of these 'Soldiers on Skis' with us.

Spring is here, and we have some exciting and important updates for the month of May as we prepare for an exciting summer season.

📍 Franconia: CLOSED for May
Our Franconia location will be closed for the entire month of May for some major spring cleaning and renovations! We are:
➡️Adding a brand-new exhibit.
➡️Revamping the Lowell Thomas Theater and include a space for a new library and reading room.

📍Our North Conway branch is open and ready for your visit!
Friday – Monday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Tuesday – Thursday: Closed
