Wings Through Time ✈️

In 1911, aviation pioneer Calbraith Perry Rodgers made history in the Wright EX Vin Fiz—a modified Wright Brothers aircraft designed for endurance rather than short demonstration flights.

Originally developed by Wright brothers, these early airplanes were built with a lightweight wooden frame, fabric-covered wings, and a unique system of wing-warping for control. Powered by a modest engine, they represent the very first practical, controlled aircraft in history.

Backed by William Randolph Hearst, Rodgers attempted to win a $50,000 prize by flying coast to coast in 30 days. While he didn’t meet the deadline, he completed the journey in 49 days—overcoming crashes, constant repairs, and the limits of early aviation—to achieve the first transcontinental flight.

Nicknamed “Vin Fiz” after its grape soda sponsor, the aircraft proved that long-distance flight was possible, even with just 35 horsepower and fragile materials.

At the Shannon Air Museum’s Genesis of Flight Experience (coming soon), you won’t just see a “replica.” You’ll see exact reproductions—meticulously crafted so that every detail, from the fabric and stitching to the nuts and bolts, matches precisely how the Wrights originally built them. These aircraft offer an authentic, rare glimpse into the true beginnings of flight. ✈️✨

✈️ Wings Through Time: The First to Land in Fredericksburg

In May 1928, the skies over Fredericksburg welcomed a historic arrival—the very first airplane to land in the area. At the controls was Sidney Shannon Sr., flying his 1927 Travel Air 2000 all the way from Wichita, Kansas.

Nicknamed the “Old Elephant Ears” for its distinctive oversized aileron balance horns, the Travel Air 2000 was a true workhorse of the late 1920s. Built by the pioneering team behind the Travel Air Manufacturing Company—including legends like Lloyd Stearman and Clyde Cessna—this rugged biplane helped usher in a new era of aviation.

With its reliable Curtiss OX-5 engine and room for two passengers, the Travel Air quickly became a favorite among barnstormers and early fixed-base operators. Capable of hopping from field to field with ease, it brought the thrill of flight to communities across America—including Fredericksburg for the very first time.

From its steel-and-wood fuselage to its fabric-covered wings, the Travel Air 2000 was as practical as it was iconic—earning another nickname, the “Wichita Fokker,” thanks to its resemblance to World War I fighters.

📍 Today, this aircraft represents more than just early aviation—it marks the beginning of Fredericksburg’s own journey into the skies. Today, you can see this historic aircraft up close at the Shannon Air Museum!
