Washington Township Museum of Local History Dedicated to preserving the diverse history of Fremont, Union City and Newark

Year round - we are open WED, FRI, the 2nd SAT & SUN, and the 4th SUN.

All open days are 10am - 4pm. Check our current hours anytime on our website - always up to date! Our little museum is the perfect place for an intimate journey into the past. Our programs are designed to make your visit interesting, informative and fun. There are two tours, Docent Led ($5) and Self-Guided ($2). We also offer guided tours of Higuera Adobe Historical Park ($5). Docent led tours for children include activities such as adobe brick making, doll making, and branding, etc.

Discover the history of Alvarado
Walking tour teaches about historic buildings
Local historian Timothy Swenson will lead a historical walking tour of Alvarado on Saturday, June 20. This half-mile tour will take about 90 minutes. The route will take tourgoers through old Alvarado, while Swenson shares details about 43 historic buildings, many of which are now gone.

The tour is free, with a suggested tour donation of $5 per person or $10 per family. A coordinating tour booklet with historical photographs will be provided. For those who would like to download a copy of the booklet before or after the tour, it’s available online at: museumoflocalhistory.org/contact/adult-tours/.

The Washington Township Museum of Local History (WTMLH) would like to formally thank the Newark Rotary Foundation (NRF) for years of supporting the local history of Fremont, Newark and Union City.

Recently, the NRF granted WTMLH $2,000 toward the acquisition of an album created in the 1880s by local amateur photographer Charles Plummer. The album had been sold at auction. Thankfully, however, it and its approximately 300 photos were spotted online by a local history aficionado. It is now permanently housed at WTMLH.

The generous support of NRF helps the museum continue to keep history alive in the tri-cities.

Forgotten East Bay Tracks: Honoring the Chinese Builders of the Final Leg Of the Pacific railroad.

Join Victor K. Wong, researcher with the Chinese History Project, as he unveils the untold story of the Chinese who built the final leg of the Pacific Railroad from Sacramento to San Francisco Bay. Don't miss the deep dive into the most well-documented portion: Alameda Cañon (now known as Niles Canyon) in the East Bay. Come and see forgotten and newly found photos of the original tracks hand-carved through this narrow Cañon; they declare to all the Herculean handiwork of the unseen workers and bear witness to the strength and tenacity of the Chinese builders we honor.
The Chinese History Project is part of the Washington Township Museum of Local History which focusses on the history of Southern Alameda County, today's towns of Fremont, Union City, and Newark.

Come out on Saturday, May 2nd to view the native garden at the Washington Township Museum of Local History.

Bring a bag lunch with you and stay for a tour of the local history museum.

The garden tour is led by Tri-City Ecology Chair, Caroline Harris. The main event - Caroline will be leading a talk at noon called “Maintaining a native plant garden with 100% volunteers”.

The museum itself is open from 10am – 4pm.

Bathrooms onsite, ADA accessible, nice and shady yard, A/C inside the building.

The Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour returns this year, featuring two gardens right here in Fremont. This free, in-person tour invites you to explore gardens that support wildlife, conserve water, avoid synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and contain at least 70% native plants. The gardens featured in the tour will demonstrate that beautiful California native plant gardens can be possible for anyone.
