Since 1951, Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio has been known as “The Track that Action Built,” with some of the best drivers having raced there. The Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame was established in 2009, fueled by the goal to honor the track’s more than 60-year history and enshrine the people who helped make Fremont Speedway what it is today. The public can tour the hall of fame to see plaques ded

icated to inducted individuals and historic photographs of the track’s history. As the only museum like this in the state, the public can sign up for Fremont Speedway Historical Club memberships to be part of the voting process on the hall of fame’s future classes. Bill Cicanese, HOF Class of 2015, was not only a skilled sprint car driver, but he was also a master craftsman, designing and building sprint car chassis. Bill built and raced cars from 1959 to 2015, a span of 56 years. After a near-fatal crash at Limaland Motorsports Park in the early 1970s, Bill spent countless hours in his shop, designing cars and other race car parts. Bill came back to racing in 1976 with the famous red, white and blue #200, his own creation. In the last two photos, Johnny Auxter and Jim Linder are pictured with Cicanese Chassis.

Leo "The Gobbler" Caldwell, HOF Class of 2011, hailed from Perrysburg, Ohio, and won the first-ever feature event at Fremont Speedway in 1951. He went on to record five feature wins and track championships in 1951 and 1952. He was known as "The Gobbler" because he gobbled up his competition.

Roy Sheets, HOF Class of 2010, posted track championships in 1966, 1967, 1981, and 1982. He scored 22 career feature wins at The Track That Action Built, along with wins all over Ohio in the familiar white and red No. 11.

Floyd Slatter, 2019 HOF inductee and a pioneer in auto racing, was one of the four owners and mechanics on the #100 car that competed at the very first race at Fremont Speedway. Floyd and fellow Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame members Dick Willey, Ken “Red” Root and driver Johnny Auxter formed the team in 1950 and even journeyed to the beaches of Daytona to compete. That first car, legend has it, had a rock-filled pipe that weighed around 500 pounds and rims from old wagon wheels that Auxter was able to find. Floyd was happiest when he was elbows deep in oil and grease working on an engine and mechanical parts. He was a fixture at fellow Hall of Fame member Fritz Meyers’ Garage.

Scott Miller, 2021 HOF inductee, posted nine career wins at Fremont Speedway, all coming in the 305 sprint division, though he competed in 410 sprints for many years. Miller jokes he would have had many 410 sprint wins at Fremont if it “weren’t for Mark Keegan.” Miller was the track’s 305 rookie of the year and raced from the 1990s through the early 2000s. Miller won the Fremont Speedway 305 Invitational in 2003.

Lee Potter, 2015 HOF inductee, started racing in 1966 in the Fremont Speedway hobby stock division. He would move to the super modifieds/sprint division and eventually the 305 sprint division, where he earned the 1990 track championship.

Earl Griffith, a 2012 HOF inductee, crewed for Hall of Famers like Herbie Robison and Harold McGilton, eventually taking his talents to open his own engine-building shop. Griff's Engines still operates today under Hall of Famer Gary Griffith. (Pictured R-L: Ron Boos, Herbie Robison, Earl Griffith)

Johnny Beaber, 2010 HOF inductee, started his racing career at 15 under a fake name to get around track rules at the time. Beaber's career took him all over the US, getting wins with the World of Outlaws and All Stars along the way. With more than 200 career wins, 24 of those at Fremont Speedway, he clinched championships at Tri-City Speedway, Mercer Raceway Park, Lernerville Speedway, Fremont Speedway, Limaland Speedway and Attica Raceway Park.

Art Ball, 2009 HOF inductee, scored 76 of his 301 wins at the Track That Action Built. He was a legend on the dirt track circuit for more than 50 years, competing in #01 cars at area tracks. He raced hobby stocks, late models, dirt trucks and sprint cars. He was inducted into the National Late Model Hall of Fame in 2019.
