Dark Muse Healing Arts hosts a staged reading this week of Tylie Shider's () WHITTIER, a play in portraits that blends theater, film, and reflects the resilience of our community back to us.

The reading commemorates the 6th anniversary of George Floyd’s murder and subsequent worldwide uprising. With generous support from Venturous Theater Fund will bring to life a full-scale production of WHITTIER as an experimental, site-specific work in South Minneapolis later this year.

TyLie Shider is an American playwright, poet, and journalist who was born and raised in New Jersey and lives in Minneapolis. He was named the inaugural ArtYard Playwright Fellow in 2023 and was the inaugural playwright-in-residence at ArtYard in 2022. He is a two-time recipient of the Jerome Fellowship at the Playwrights’ Center and an I Am Soul playwright-in-residence at the National Black Theatre.

📸 TyLie hosted a staged reading of WHITTIER at ArtYard in 2022, at the end of his month-long residency as inaugural playwright in residence.

The play follows a diverse community of neighbors quarantined in Whittier, Minneapolis, days after the murder of George Floyd. This multimedia docudrama is inspired by the graffiti, lawn signs, and murals created in protest of Floyd’s murder. The piece is adapted from focus groups, interviews, and small talks the playwright conducted with neighbors, small business owners, and community leaders of faith during the 2020 uprisings in his neighborhood.

There’s still time to step into the world of Lora Webb Nichols.

Photographs Made, Photographs Collected brings together images drawn from Nichols’ extraordinary archive of approximately 24,000 negatives — intimate portraits of family and neighbors, scenes of labor and leisure, and quiet moments of everyday life in early 20th-century Wyoming.

Taken over decades with tenderness, curiosity, and remarkable attention to ordinary rituals, these photographs feel both historically distant and deeply familiar. Before the exhibition closes, come spend some time with this singular body of work and the communities it preserves.

Aqualumina's finale featured a giant moving fish tank bathed in blue light by Laura Heit () and ArtYard’s technical team, including Eric Fiorito and Sandra Dillon.

Dozens of bespoke fish, coral forms, and other sea creatures encircled the tent using a magic lantern technique, while illuminated giant fish puppets created by Elsa Mora () swam outside to an ethereal soundtrack by Cindertalk (), creating a dreamy, otherworldly ending to the evening.

This entire element of the festival came together in the final 48 hours, as the tech crew transformed the tent at Sunbeam Lenape Park into a luminous underwater world through painstaking shadow work and projection experiments.

Scroll to see the swimming fish and fish tank — and swipe to the end for final images for a behind-the-scenes glimpse inside the tent during the daytime.

A summer edition of The Golden Hour arrives at ArtYard on Saturday, July 11, with an evening of beautifully unpredictable performance.

Celebrated writer Lucy Sante — author of Low Life and Pulitzer Prize finalist I Heard Her Call My Name — joins composer and musician Simon Hanes and his psychedelic surf-rock ensemble Tsons of Tsunami for an intimate double bill curated and hosted by Joseph Keckler.

“Lucy Sante is one of the handful of living masters of the American language, as well as a singular historian and philosopher of American experience” — Peter Schjeldahl, The New Yorker

“Simon Hanes is an anarchic young composer… a leading musician in New York’s downtown scene.” — The New York Times

The Golden Hour unfolds as a kaleidoscopic evening of music, storytelling, and unexpected performance. Past guests have included Charlie Kaufman, Edgar Oliver, Alex Tatarsky, Lindy West, Ahamefule Oluo, and Dael Orlandersmith.

An appreciation post for the doorways of In the Company of Still Life.

Throughout the exhibition, intricately painted thresholds and carefully imagined rooms invite visitors to move slowly — from one atmosphere, color palette, and world into another. These passages have become artworks in their own right: framing objects, shaping mood, and turning the experience of looking into something deeply immersive.

There’s one week left to wander through these rooms before the exhibition closes on May 31. Come get lost in the details while you still can.

The exhibition presents work by 40 artists across a series of distinct, immersive rooms inspired by homes, studios, and architectural spaces.

As we celebrate a rainy holiday weekend, we're thinking back to Aqualumina — to illuminated costumes, the glow of lantern light, and a community procession celebrating the power and beauty of water.

Thank you to everyone who came out to gather with us along the river. These photos are a reminder of the imagination, generosity, and collective joy that made this year’s festival feel so special.

We’re still smiling about the jellyfish parasols, rain cloud hats, shibori river suits, and the bespoke handmade creations and joy you brought to the procession.
