Prior to the war, Rebecca Hillenburg ’s father Russell E. Watson was a carpenter. He joined the Navy serving on the USS Sacramento and on his 21st birthday, December 7, 1941 as he was getting ready for church with his wife in their apartment at Pearl Harbor the attack commenced. A previously broken arm kept him from ship duty as he tried to come aboard and instead reported to the infirmary to care for the many wounded. It was 3 weeks before family back home in Indiana were notified that the two had survived. Later in the war his ship was destroyed by a kamikaze, and he spent 18 hours in the water before being rescued. After the war he took up his carpentry trade eventually using the GI bill to earn first an Undergrad and eventually a Masters degree. He taught math before serving as a principal and School Administrator. Throughout the years he never stopped using wood to create. One of the last times he used these tools was with Mrs. Hillenberg’s husband to build his grandson a small rocking chair which is still a cherished keepsake in her home. Thank you for letting us display all the memories of a life well lived wrapped up in these simple hand tools.

When Edgar Barlow entered college in 1961 there was a computer on campus but it required an entire building kept at 40 degrees and used punch cards for simple calculations. Thus his Slide Rule was well worth the $20 sacrifice and the decade of service it provided for him to earn his Civil Engineering degree and start his own Engineering firm. Thank you for letting us frame this part of your history!
