Parmer County Museum

Parmer County Museum A nonprofit supporting the history of Parmer County. The Union Congregational Church was Friona’s first church.

The original wooden structure was dedicated in 1909, and burned in 1921. The subsequent adobe structure constructed after the fire endures today as the Parmer County Pioneer Heritage Museum. The church’s conversion into a museum began in the 1970’s when a local women’s group endeavored to conserve and make use of the old building. They helped clean up the building and repurposed the space for the

local girl scout troop. However, real headway in the museum project wouldn’t begin until the early 2000’s when a student service learning project helped to reinvigorate and complete the restoration of the Museum. Today, the museum features items significant to local pioneer history.

The Parmer County Museum and our new space, the American Legion building will both be open, Saturday September 20 for the annual Maize Days celebration..... We will open as soon as the parade and bed race is over. We are excited and very proud of all the new displays that have been created over the last year. There are no public restrooms in either facility. Also the elevator at the church is under construction.. Sorry for the inconvenience. Hope to see you Saturday 😁

This made me chuckle! Sorting through random containers and came across one labeled Hugh Moseley. I'm sure many of you remember Hugh! He was a wonder and I probably wouldn't be doing this job without his encouragement... So here are three photos of what I found.... You just never know what's in one of his boxes! 🤣

I am expanding the display of the Black Community. It will be moved from the Church to the newly renovated Legion building. I want to locate some of these community signs added during the 1955 Rural Progress Contest. Maybe we will get lucky, and someone will have one stashed somewhere!
