America's National Churchill Museum, on the campus of Westminster College, commemorates the life, times, and distinguished career of Sir Winston Churchill. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury. Dating back to the 17th century, the Church was painstakingly moved from London to Fulton and lovingly reconstructed, stone-by-stone, on the Westminster College campus. Featuring a hand crafted tracker organ and a

n original Wren pulpit, the Church now stands exactly as Wren's design envisaged in 1677. Walk through the sculpture Breakthrough, created from eight sections of the actual Berlin Wall by celebrated artist Edwina Sandys, Churchill's granddaughter. View the historic Gymnasium where Churchill delivered his famous Iron Curtain speech, its structure frozen in time waiting for you to walk into the past. See two magnificent bronze sculptures: Franta Belsky's Churchill (1970) and Don Wiegand's brass relief Iron Curtain (2011).

On this Memorial Day in the United States, we pause to remember, honor, and salute all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this nation.

Among them is Fulton native and Westminster College alumnus Lt. John 'Skippy' Lutz, who was killed in action in May 1943 while serving as an airman with the Eagle Squadrons during World War II.

The Museum is honored to have a special gallery devoted to Lt. Lutz and his service.

Congratulations to the Westminster College Class of 2026. Today, you join the distinguished ranks of Westminster alumni alongside Sir Winston Churchill, who received an honorary degree from the College eighty years ago. May you carry forward the same spirit of leadership, courage, and service that has long defined Westminster’s extraordinary legacy.

On this day in 1945–VE Day—Winston Churchill appeared on the balcony of the Ministry of Health and addressed the British people:

“God bless you all. This is your victory, victory of the cause of freedom in every land. In all our long history we have never seen a greater day than this. Everyone, man or woman, has done their best. Everyone has tried, none have flinched. Neither the long years, nor the dangers, nor the fierce attacks of the enemy, have in any way weakened the unbending resolve of the British nation. God bless you all.”

In this rarely seen photograph of the scene, Churchill’s first grandchild, Julian Sandys, looks up at his famous grandpapa.

Few phrases in modern diplomacy have carried greater meaning than the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom. Winston Churchill gave those words lasting prominence on March 5, 1946, when he delivered his historic “The Sinews of Peace” address at Westminster College in Fulton. Both Winston Churchill and Harry S Truman were awarded honorary degrees by Westminster College in 1946 making them some of the College’s most distinguished alumni. This morning, during the Alumni Awards Convocation, we remember their association with the College while celebrating the remarkable achievements of our some of today’s distinguished alumni and alumnae.

On this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed a Congressional resolution making Sir Winston Churchill an Honorary Citizen of the United States—the first in U.S. history.

This pen marked that moment.

It is a poignant reminder of a statesman whose words, leadership, and commitment to freedom bound together two nations in a common cause.

We are proud to preserve and share stories and objects like this that illuminate the legacy of a man—an honorary American—who helped shape the modern world.

We are fortunate to have Alan Combs Photography and Design as a partner to capture new history in the making.

Thank you for preserving the 80th Anniversary of “The Sinews of Peace” for today and tomorrow. We look forward to sharing your images here and elsewhere soon!

Being behind the camera at the 80th anniversary celebration of the Sinews of Peace speech at America's National Churchill Museum was an incredible honor.

As I photographed the evening, I kept thinking about the images captured here in 1946 when Winston Churchill delivered the speech that would become known for introducing the phrase “Iron Curtain.”

It makes you wonder:
Which photographs we take today will still matter 50 or 80 years from now?

Events like this remind me that photography isn’t just about documenting a moment—it’s about preserving history while it’s still unfolding.

Honored to play a small part in capturing this chapter.
