We had an amazing tour with the young scholars of Mirror Image Leadership Academy.

They learned about A. Quinn Jones, local folk artists (Jessie Aaron & Alyne Harris), the pleasant street/5th Avenue Neighborhoods and the history of R&B, gospel and its influence on rock music. We listened to music from James Brown, Etta James, Buddy Guy, Mahalia Jackson and more.

We especially enjoyed learning about Mirror Image from the youth and their favorite things to do.

They gave us great ideas on engaging youth in museum settings. Next year, we will art supplies on hand. Thank you Mirror Image Leadership for including our museum in your summer plans.

Free and Open to the Public

In honor of Black Music Month and the celebration of local people and their stories, join us on Saturday, June 6 at the Hippodrome Cinema, for the annual Juneteenth Film Festival featuring films by Lex Shelton and Billy Wirtz, a performance by Wester Joseph, an engaging conversation with Rev. Billy Wirtz and some local stars.

A review from our recent concert with Beautiful Bobby Blackmon ....

"The setting also added to my experience in a way I wasn't expecting. The A. Quinn Jones Museum is a historically Black cultural center, and hearing Soul Blues performed there gave the music a context that a general venue would not have provided in the same way. The audience was engaged throughout, and the relatively intimate scale of the event made it easy to feel connected to what was happening on stage rather than just watching from a distance. After the show, speaking briefly with Blackmon made the experience feel less like a concert and more like a direct encounter with a working musician still actively carrying this tradition forward.
This points back to something the course has returned to repeatedly, that the blues is not a museum piece but a living practice, and seeing an artist like Blackmon perform original material alongside classic covers made that argument in a way that no reading or video can truly convey." Aaron.
