It's National Alligator Day!
As part of the Gator Nation, we want to celebrate the contributions of the real-life counterparts of Albert and Alberta. Alligators are essential to the wetlands of Florida, as their burrows provide habitats for other species, and during droughts, these holes retain water serving as a little oases.
Painted in 1926, "Hunting Alligators" by Frederick Carl Frieseke, on view in "Florida in the Frame," shows two hunters in the wetland, stalking an alligator that sits on a trunk. Dwindling populations of Alligators in the 20th century came as a result of overhunting and habitat loss, being recognized as Endangered Species by the mid-1900s.
