It’s ! 🦕💚Did you know Maryland has a state dinosaur?
Meet Astrodon johnstoni, a massive sauropod from the Cretaceous Period. Its name means “star tooth” — inspired by fossils discovered in 1858 in Prince George’s County by Maryland’s State Agricultural Chemist, Philip Tyson.
Tyson found two unusual teeth and passed them along to Dr. Christopher Johnston, who sliced one open and spotted a star-shaped pattern inside. That discovery became one of the earliest dinosaur finds in the U.S. — and the very first in Maryland!
