The Museum features educational exhibits and programs designed to spark visitors' interest and imagination in our City's history. The Communi

ty Museum occupies the historic Freight House, the History Park and the B&O Caboose. Designed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Head Architect, Ephraim Francis Baldwin, the Gaithersburg Railroad Station was built in 1884. This enabled Gaithersburg, previously known as both Forest Oak and Logtown, new and expedited shipping opportunities south, to Washington, DC. The commercial opportunities this access afforded helped develop the burgeoning Gaithersburg economy. In 1978, its buildings were placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additional hours are available by appointment. Handicap accessible.

It’s ! 🦕💚Did you know Maryland has a state dinosaur?
Meet Astrodon johnstoni, a massive sauropod from the Cretaceous Period. Its name means “star tooth” — inspired by fossils discovered in 1858 in Prince George’s County by Maryland’s State Agricultural Chemist, Philip Tyson.

Tyson found two unusual teeth and passed them along to Dr. Christopher Johnston, who sliced one open and spotted a star-shaped pattern inside. That discovery became one of the earliest dinosaur finds in the U.S. — and the very first in Maryland!

🦴 Maryland history + dinosaurs = perfection.

Join us tomorrow at the Gaithersburg Book Festival for conversation with author Jason Green about his book “Too Precious to Loose.” The book follows his journey from public service to a deeply personal awakening after hearing his grandmother’s memories — memories that tell the story of Quince Orchard, a historically Black community in Gaithersburg.

Community Museum Manager and member of Gaithersburg History Project, Naomi Pequette, will facilitate a discussion about family, history, and the communities that shape who we become.

Catch the conversation at the Gertrude Stein Pavilion from 3:15–4:05 pm, with a signing at 4:15 pm. We hope to see you there!
