“The Four Winds Will Have Us All”:
A Lost Poem by Carl Sandburg
Once Again Found

By Franklin Mason and John Quinley

In 1919, Carl Sandburg wrote a whimsical little poem about a few of his good friends, all of them journalists at the Chicago Daily News—and all of whom went on to exceptional careers. The poem is of historical interest because of the personalities involved; but also, because of its own curious history: shortly after it was born. . . it disappeared. Guided by a poet’s ear and a deep sensitivity to life’s complexities, her songs don’t offer answers, but they listen well. They become something luminous: a way forward, a way back. Held’s latest, “Another Jane (2026),” an ode to Jane Goodall, turns toward what we need more of in the world. 🌎

On Friday April 17th, the Site will be closed temporarily to give our sincere condolences to Cheryl Dowell in a life of celebration ceremony in Bishop Hill at the Methodist Church at 10 am who devoted her life to Swedish heritage in our region. Our Sites cannot survive without each others’ support being entrenched so close having Swedish roots throughout the years as State Museums. Cheryl was a lifelong Assistant Superintendent at the Bishop Hill State Historic Site. Service information can be found at Ruxfuneralhome.com. We will reopen at 12:30pm.

In the past couple of days the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site found an artist named Heywood Banks stopping by to give his respect. He is an American icon writing songs in a similar style straight out of the Rootabaga catalog like 'Toast', 'Pancreas', and 'Fly's Eyes' made famous on the Bob and Tom Radio Show. Also discovered today was an Arlo Guthrie live act singing on the Muppet Show in 1978 playing 'A Horse Named Bill'. Casey Robbins let me know that he still plays this Muppet video to his young children to make them happy is absolutely wonderful. Carl would be proud that prolific artists and young families alike find his joy today!
