Ever wanted to cherish your own piece of ELISSA’s storied history?

The Galveston 250 online auction is now live!

These commemorative items were generously donated by staff and crew to raise funds to support the 1877 ELISSA’s unique approach to keeping maritime history alive as as an actively sailing square-rigged iron barque ship.

The auction will run for 7 days, ending Thursday, Oct. 29.

On the island? Drop by Beerfoot Craft & Draft today––Thursday, Oct. 22––from 12-5 pm to check out the auction items in person *and* enjoy beautiful views of the Harvest Moon Regatta.

Instructor Cece Rodriguez (.atelier.tx) will lead us through a relaxing, all-levels workout overlooking Galveston Harbor, and we’ll close out the evening with an optional cold plunge. The sun is setting earlier, so we’re getting started at 6 p.m. 🌞 The weather looks great Thursday, but in the case of rain or cold temps, yoga will move indoors.

Our sincere thanks to Houston Public Media and writer Julianna Washburn for taking a closer look at the community meetings planned to help shape Juneteenth’s Home here on the island.

SmithGroup’s Dayton Schroeter summed up the reason for the sessions beautifully:

"The vision really has to come from the community and the people who hold this history closest.”

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on October 24 and 25 in Galveston.

When Visit Galveston asked our experts here at Galveston Historical Foundation to help research and write text for four of the new Wayfinding signs recently installed around the island, we couldn’t say yes fast enough. We jumped at the chance to provide historical context for signs detailing architectural history, port history, Juneteenth, and the 1900 Storm, the last of which you see pictured here.

The 1900 Storm sign puts the natural disaster into broader context, describing not only Galveston’s prosperity and international renown before the hurricane, but the backbreaking work, engineering, and ingenuity that followed.

We applaud Visit Galveston’s dedication to educating visitors. By continuing to tell our stories, we all help ensure our shared history remains alive and relevant for generations to come.
