Honoring her Honduran heritage, Jasmine Zelaya’s exhibition “Tropical Depression,” currently on view in our Brown Foundation Gallery, confronts the history of oppression and exploitation of workers in Honduras by Chiquita Brand International, formerly the United Fruit Company.

Directly impacting her family, Jasmine’s mother recalled to her the vouchers to United Fruit stores that once substituted for employees’ wages. Representing the women in her family, all named after flowers, floral patterns are painted on the familial faces emerging throughout “Tropical Depression.”

Currently on view in our 1878 Gallery, “All-You-Can-Eat” shares the scarcity mentality to the broader immigrant experience and the pursuit of the American Dream.

Komie Kim Le’s exhibition features stacked, tense forms and an abundance of objects, some repeating, as she reflects on the hoarding habits she found often a part of immigrant households.

If you feel as if you’re inside a game of “I Spy”, it’s intentional. Using her childhood love of “I Spy” books as one source of inspiration, pulls you into a space of color, food and intrigue, as her work serves to bridge the gap to her Vietnamese heritage.

This weekend, Saturday, June 20, is pouring into all of your senses for their 12th Anniversary Party!

With specialty beer releases, live music, live art from Galveston artists, and a curated itinerary of community celebrations, you’ll be tapping into a full sensory experience.
 
We’re keeping your eyes entertained with live paintings and silver jewelry making by our GAC Teaching Artists, Sierra Sakel, Krystal Miles, and Jessica Antonelli, from 3PM - 7PM, this Saturday, at GIB.

They’ll be able to share with you about their upcoming classes at Galveston Arts Center.

The second Saturday of every month you’ll find the doors open late at our Galveston ArtWalk participating downtown galleries and shops, celebrating the local creative community with live music, opening exhibitions, pop-up markets and an evening full of immersing in our island’s culture.

Stop in the GAC this Saturday, June 13th, for the Opening Reception’s of Komie Kim Le’s exhibition, “All-You-Can-Eat”, and Jasmine Zelaya’s, “Tropical Depression”, from 6PM – 9 PM, with their Artist Talks beginning at 6:30PM.

Housed in the historic First National Bank building at the corner of 22nd and Strand, GAC was first founded as the Centre on the Strand in 1968.

At that time, the donated the building for use as an art education center.

From 1971 to 1986 the Galveston Arts Center, under the Galveston County Cultural Arts Council, Inc., grew to offer quality programs in the form of exhibitions, art education and public festivals for all the Galveston County area.

In 1986, The Galveston Arts Center became a separate non-profit organization.

We are honored to celebrate 40 years of Galveston Arts Center this year!

📣We are thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership for our GAC Kids Summer Camps with the Galveston Historical Foundation.

As part of this summer experience, campers will enjoy weekly harbor tour boat rides and walking museum tours.

Captain Brian will guide campers through Galveston Harbor via boat ride while their art teacher leads them through engaging creative activities inspired by the sights and stories of the waterfront.

Students will explore Galveston’s rich maritime history and have the opportunity to encounter dolphins and other marine life along the way.

We look forward to a summer full of creativity, exploration, and fun with your young artists!
